GIMP: How do I turn a jpeg into a painting?

Hey everybody:

I found a site on the internet that gave a tutorial on how to turn a jpeg into a sketch then into a painting but it was hard to follow along with. Does anyone have a simple tutorial for me to follow? I have a picture that means a lot to me and I'd like to make a painting out of it. If you can help I would be very appreciative.
