Flash crashes on 3.6.9

Ack! Installed 3.6.9 over a well-working copy of 3.6.8 on my Fantom 1 Tb. external hard drive, went to You Tube, and get a "Adobe Flash has crashed" error. Same on Disney.com. Non-video sites that use Flash just for bling work fine.

I had copied over npswf32.dll, FlashUtil10i_Plugin.exe, and flashplayer.xpt from local computer (latest version, 10.1.82.76) as I always do. Thinking maybe the problem lay with the new Flash version, I installed the old Flash version (10.1.53.64) and copied those files over, but same problem. Note that I do NOT have Firefox installed on the local computer, only IE, but I always install the plugins (into the system32/macromed/flash directory) as well since I run FF portable from the external.

I noticed instructions here that if you are having trouble, you can install Flash as an extension, but when I tried to do that by clicking the link, it failed, saying it can't find the install script. Just discovered from an old post that someone suggested renaming the .xpi to .zip and installing the files manually, and doing so, I saw there was, in addtion to the npswf32.dll and flashplayer.xpt that I was copying over from my local PC, another file: npswf32_FlashUtil.exe, instead of the FlashUtil10i_Plugin.exe I was copying over---don't know if it's the same, and I'm on XP and that file is supposed to be for Vista/Win7.

When I copied those VERY old files from the xpi to the data/plugins directory, You Tube then works fine! But of course, the flash version is ancient, since that .xpi file has very old versions. So the old versions of Flash available from the .xpi file work fine, the new versions of Flash (10.1.82.76 and one previous) don't. If I need the npswf32_FlashUtil.exe, it's not coming down with the new Flash plugin manual install, only FlashUtil10i, etc.

Having the same exact problem with the new 3.6.9 install on a Kingston Flash Drive (when the older version 3.6.8 worked great), so it's looking like it's the FF Portable install isn't playing with the new Flash at all. Flash worked fine in 3.6.8. Need my You Tube :); can you help?

>Or can I use the latest npswf32.dll and flashplayer.xpt with that old version of npswf32_FlashUtil.exe?

Thanx, Otto; I think maybe I

Thanx, Otto; I think maybe I wasn't clear. I DID install the new version locally (not to a FF directory since I don't have FF on the local PC, but to the system32/macromed/flash directory) and then copied the files over to the data/plugins directory as well, and that was causing the problem. When I used the files from the .xpi (changed to .zip and copied manually there), everything works fine. But the flash in the .xpi is ancient, many, many versions old, and VERY insecure. So yes, that IS a problem. When I use the current versions instead, it breaks; with the old versions from the .xpi, it works! But is insecure.

This is only since the update to 3.6.9; everything worked fine in 3.6.8, but unfortunately, I nuked that installer file when I downloaded 3.6.9 and .8 is not available here. Which is why I'm asking for help getting this working.

I know I should have kept the 3.6.8 installer just in case, but honestly usually don't have any issues with portable apps updates!

Any solution?

Anyone have any other solution, other than running the very old version of Flash in the .xpi? This problem with 3.6.9 has never happened to me before with any other Portable upgrade (as I mentioned, everything worked in 3.6.8); usually the latest Flash (installed by just copying over the npswf32.dll file) works great, and upgrades just continue to work. Would really like to get this working, safely, as I'm really loathe to run this with old Flash and there doesn't seem to be any upgrading of the Flash in the .xpi.

ok

first the 368:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files/

then wait long enough, the whole list of files will be downloaded and then navigate to firefox and you will find all the installers there.

But before you start delete all:

The problem with flash, well I remember there was a problem reported sometimes, I had once also some inconsistencies, but often this is because two different versions are around and the browser gets confused. Check that you have not other versions around, in folders on the system drive or on the portable drive under app firefox plugin or so.
The old plugins were hiding in the plugin folder under the application also on drive C, while flash is now placed to the known macromed in system32.
On the portable drive, we have also 2 folders for plugins, one under data and one under app itself. Check that you do not have conflicting versions in there, if you place something in both folders, make sure it is the same thing at least.
if you have no local install of FF, then you can properly uninstal the flash stuff
even by windows unistall function, by that you will remove also some reg entries etc pointing to the local flash, so the browser will not get confused.
the current flash definitely does work well with the 369 version, so it will be some of those small things breaking all.

Google Chrome ships with

Google Chrome ships with flash by default. This may be a more viable solution for you.

Of course, you could also sign up for the html5 video preview on youtube and disable flash entirely.

yes right

have tested on my virtual machine with no flash installed.
It reports as the latest to adobe test site, the included dll is marked as coming from adobe itself, but I have strange experience with it. It works somehow, but something like the open flash clon of linux distros.
It does something, works on some sites on other not.
I can view you tube videos, but this is not the only use of flash. On other sites it simply does either nothing or some windows opens and closes again. Others experienced some functions inoperative etc.
On IE and FF I have no problems, all works same and as expected.
So even if the dll came really from adobe, then there might be some problem in the browser itself, this could be by the permanent updates and new versions probably.

Still problem

Hate to be a nudge, but I'm still not able to figure this out, and hope that maybe a fresh explanation might inspire someone else with new solutions. Re-tried with the latest version of FF portable (3.6.10) AND the latest version of Flash (10.1.85) and no go. All works great with the ancient version in the .xpi file here (10.0.32), but once I upgraded from FF portable 3.6.8, the newer Flash versions don't work (they worked in 3.6.8).

Again, I'm installing it by installing the FF version of Flash from Adobe to my harddrive (which doesn't have FF on it) and copying the npswf32.dll and the supporting files over from the c:\windows\system32\macromedia\flash directory to the m:\firefoxportable\data\plugins directory on my external drive. This has always worked before, but now Flash just crashes when I'm using the new versions in FF from the external (the new Flash version works fine in IE on my regular harddrive). When I replace the newer version with the very old npswf32.dll and the supporting files from the .xpi (after renaming it .zip and extracting), Flash works fine. But I don't want to use the old insecure versions.

Is there anyone there who might have a solution to this? One the one hand, I don't want to give up the occasional You Tube video, etc. (and I need to check Flash files I create in FF for sites I design), yet I don't like running such an old version. Thanks!

try find

if you might have some old flash installed as well.
For example it can be that the xpi did install its version at some time to the app folder where you will also find a plugin folder.
You can have the plugin in both, but it must not be different version
One day I had also problems, rectified it to the point that old version was biting the new one.

The current version did work well with the current ff. There is now new version available, but I think the servers will be overloaded for the moment.

I was trying the current version with the portable ff on an xp virtual machine which
has definitely no flash in it at all and all did work well so far.

Using it with 3610 works as expected.

Thanks, ottosykora; as I've

Thanks, ottosykora; as I've said, the ONLY items in the plug-in directories is now the old ones from the .xpi; when I tried the new ones, I REPLACED the old ones. I did NOT have both installed at the same time.

However, today I found something interesting: if I start Firefox from my external drive with the Firefox.exe in the /app directory instead of from the FirefoxPortable.exe launcher, it uses the updated plugin I have on my desktop instead of the plugin from the external drive's /data/plugins directory and works fine.

So the problem is DEFINITELY with the PORTABLE exe for me. I always run from the portable exe since that instance has all my customizations. Starting the app from Firefox.exe starts with a blank slate since it looks to my harddrive instead. My profile, bookmarks, etc. are all on the external drive, naturally. Maybe the reason you (and others) aren't having the same issue is that you have Firefox installed on your harddrive, which I don't, and it's looking there.
