Why?

Ubuntu has one and Fedora also provides one. the Fedora one is nearly portable by design. there is no need.

not working for me

I tried to get Damn Small Linux and it downloaded, extracted and I also got the virtual machine. I tried to run it in Windows, but I kept on getting a loop of error messages (like 7 messages would come up again and again). I haven't tried booting from my USB drive because the BIOS at the public library (not surprisingly) is password protected.

DSL is dead

no progress has been made on it and all the good Devs abandoned it like as if it where the titanic and went towards Tinycore Linux.

I try and help as much as i can but as time goes by DSL has started showing its age (its based on Debian 3.0). Debian is currently at 5.06 if i remember correctly.

I don't mind too much

Its just that at the public library there is a limited amount of time that anyone can use a computer. I originally started to get Kubuntu, but then I saw it was going to take too long, so I picked the smallest visual linux I knew, DSL. Thats the only one I have tried (so far) on my extra 2 GB Cruzer. I'll test some more in the future (if I have time) and tell ya'll about it.

TinyCore too Tiny

I think TinyCore, while fun, is a little too tiny. I understand the concept, but it'd be nice if we could see some custom community builds of TinyCore with at least some basic functionality (closer to DSL).

Get off of your knees.

Please, treat yourself with a little self-respect.
Grovelling really won't force anybody to help you any faster.

Uh, and you really should lay off the caps lock.

Finally, did you look at www.ubuntu.com?
Two clicks from their home page takes you to a super-simple setup for creating a Live USB version.

Good luck.

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

every ubuntu distro

contains one, does not matter if it is called kubuntu, ubuntu or what ever. If the original does not make you happy, you can follow the link from Darkbee, but note that this will install virtual box on your usb stick and then ubunutu into it. So yes you can then run it from your windows desktop (windows version of virtual box) but it will be so slow that you will not be able to use it for any serious purpose.

Haven't Actually Tried It... oops

I have to confess I haven't actually tried that software out that I linked to. I just thought the concept was cool. The Linux movement in general seems to understand better these days that in order to gain better widespread acceptance you have have a more widespread appeal, thus making it easier for users in general to hack around.

The documentation is a little unclear though as it implies you can both, boot from your USB or use it in Windows, as you said via VirtualBox. Obviously the first option is better if you want to stand any chance of doing anything worthwhile particularly if you choose a distro that can load completely into RAM (or as close to completely).

concept is cool indeed

If you have no ubuntu (or it does use other distros recently too) and no virtual box installation files, it will grab all components from the net (like our live installers) and will assemble it correctly to an empty stick. It takes only few clicks, you have to tell it as how big space you want use for variable parts etc, where is your target stick and if you have an iso of ubuntu ready on your PC. From there all goes automatic.
You end up with a stick and when you insert it, you will find some additional context menu commands when you right click on it. It might be even able to boot from that stick in some cases, I had some problems with that however.
First most computers I have do not support boot from usb anyway and then I figured out the stick needs to be prepared with the HP formating utility first, otherwise the software will not be able to make it bootable anyway.

In general virtual box will start and the ubuntu will be in it. You can then configure it, add apps etc.
But as it is a virtual machine, running this from an average usb flash device, well not a real fun, just a whow! it works!

Stand Up!

And surf here

Choose your distro and no need to beg anyone... Wink

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report Biggrin
