ApE Plasmid and DNA editor

This is a handy tool for undergrad and grad students in molecular biology. I've posted on the author's wiki page a recommendation to make this a portable app, even tried myself using the Installer but failed. You can find the software link here: http://www.biology.utah.edu/jorgensen/wayned/ape/

Keep up the fantastic work! Love the site.

This is something...

I might like to use for my college major, but it looks a bit out-of-date. It's free, but what about it? Is it open-source?

I'm tired of people living in their fantasy world when the clock is ticking away, and when they are unable to see reality for what it is.

It is an older program, but I

It is an older program, but I have yet to find a free standalone program as simple and straightforward to use. Many of these DNA manipulation functions are available online, but scattered across numerous bioinformatic websites and not very intuitive. There are commercial programs that will do much more but its unlikely you'll ever use all their functions. This one is small and gets the job done without a lot of frills.

I wasn't able to determine from the author's wiki if its open source, but he does offer separate Windows, Mac, and Linux packages for download. I've searched Sourceforge regularly and there is no opensource program with a GUI that compares to this one.

Hope that answers your questions and you're still interested in pursuing this as a portapps program.
