[Fixed] GIMP Portable 2.6.11 does not open other file types then XCF

Hey guys,
Installed GIMP Portable 2.6.11 over an existing 2.6.10. Tried to open a JPG file from XnView in GIMP, error message: Unknown filetype.
Trying to open the file from within GIMP: GIMP does only see XCF files, click on "all image files" - same behaviour, only XCFs are displayed. Click on "all file types" shows JPGs to, but opening the file leads to the same results - unkown image type.
Same problem with a clean install of GIMP Portable 2.6.11.
Now I switched back to the backup of GIMP Portable 2.6.10, works well.
Any ideas?

Kind regards
Uwe Mayer

They do

On the Thunderbird App Page there is a section for "Legacy Versions". Generally speaking though you had better have a really good reason for using obsolete/superseded software, because particularly with browsers and email clients you may be opening yourself up to all kinds of security vulnerabilities.

That may well be, its the same plugin.
In that case I would expect that saving it as anything other than XCF (JPG, FTIF, GIF, PNG) might cause problems too?

I can confirm that I can't

I can confirm that I can't open JPG files either. To get a previous version of the portable app is easy:

  1. Start downloading the current version of the app
  2. When it gets to the page, "Your portable app will download shortly" hit the stop button on your browser
  3. In the URL address will be 2 instances of the version you are downloading, look for the 6.11 and replace both with 6.10
  4. Hit enter
  5. Download the previous version
  6. Enjoy portable GIMP being able to open and save JPG files

I tried a little

I tried a little experiment:

  1. Renamed the directory with 2.6.11 in it
  2. Installed GIMP portable 2.6.10
  3. Confirmed 2.6.10 can open and save JPG's
  4. Renamed the file-jpeg.exe in the 2.6.10 plugin directory
  5. Copied over the file-jpeg.exe from 2.6.11
  6. Started 2.6.10

I went to open a file and it would not even list the JPG files in the dialogue box.

I went the other way and copied the file-jpeg.exe from 2.6.10 to the 2.6.11, same thing it would not even list JPG files.

I will just use the 2.6.10 version until they fix it.

I can confirm for me

Yep, can't open any other file type, or save as any other file type.
tried to open PNG, GIF, BMP, JPG - each gives a similar error message. The one for JPG:

Plug-in crashed: "file-jpeg.exe"
(X:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable\App\gimp\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\file-jpeg.exe)

The dying plug-in may have messed up GIMP's internal state. You may want to save your images and restart GIMP to be on the safe side.

However, I had no problem seeing different file types in the File Open window.

This version of GIMP seems to open very quickly. While that might be great, I think it's not doing something it's supposed to be doing when it starts up.

Here's a REALLY good question: Has anybody used 2.6.11 WITHOUT this problem? JTH?

Same here. Installed 2.6.11

Same here. Installed 2.6.11 over 2.6.10 using PA menu, answered "yes" to temporarily replace two XML-related DLLs upon GIMP start. Open dialog shows *.jpg if I set "all files" but refuses to open any JPEG (»unknown file type«). Running on WinXP+SP3, all updates.

How --

How are you opening the files? Double-clicking them, after associating them with GIMP in the computer? I wonder if there's another way to look into the error, in cases like mine where I have not set the file type association but am attempting to open files from GIMP.

My GIMP 2.6.11 will not show any image file type in the File Open window, as with so many other reports here, so it seems a little strange to me that yours does... but I wonder if that has to do with file associations, or are you not running Windows? (I'm using Win7 Home Premium 64.) I suppose it would be easy enough to find out by changing file associations in this machine temporarily. Hm. I'll have to figure out how to use CAFE Mod, assuming it runs on this OS.

Regardless, our problems must be due to the same plugin failure. I'm just not sure how to verify that.

Cheers!

Problem is with the Portable Version

All with 2.6.11:

The normal installed version works fine.

There is a BIG difference in start-up time between the portable and installed version.

The installed version takes much longer, and spends most of the initial start-up querying for new plugins.

Another experiment I tried:
1. Closed and uninstalled both installed and portable versions.
2. Re-installed Portable version and ran it - problem still exists.
3. Installed the normally installed version, but did not run it.
4. Ran the Portable version - now, it opened files no problem.
5. Uninstalled the normally installed version
6. Now the problem has returned for the portable version.

I even tried copying the "file-jpeg.exe" from the installed version to the portable version, same thing with my experiments above, it does not even show that it can open JPG files.

The fault lies squarely in the court of the portable apps guys, don't install version 2.6.11, you can't open or save anything but XCF files.

Yes, I have the install

Yes, I have the install version on my PC at home and the Portable version on my USB stick for work, both are 2.6.11. The installed version opens and saves any type of file no problems, the portable version will open and save XCF files but nothing else.

I copied the 'file-jpeg.exe' plugin from the installed version to the portable version and it's as if the plugin was missing completely. The Open file dialogue box does not even list JPEG as a file type or show JPG files in the list of files when I know there are JPG files in the directory.

The fix is easy enough, download 2.6.10 and do not update to 2.6.11 Smile

Well for me GIMP itself does

Well for me GIMP itself does not crash just the plugin. Have you tried opening XCF files? They are the only type of files this version will open (or save) for me.

XCF is the native file format for GIMP

Opening or saving as an XCF does not require a plugin.
If you want to open or save any other type of file, GIMP needs to convert the file to or from that other filetype; in order to do that, it uses plugins.
Browse to the Plugins folder
X:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable\App\gimp\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins
You will see that there are plugins to use all kinds of other file types (the plugins start with "file-"

No go

Error still occurs.
I tried the update, and I got the Unknown File type error, and couldn't save as other types.
Then I uninstalled and re-installed from a fresh download, and I get the errors that I listed before.

Confirmed, Pulled

I can confirm this issue. GIMP Portable 2.6.11 will only work if the local version is installed. I have pulled 2.6.11 and reposted 2.6.10 Rev 2.

GIMP Portable 2.6.11 Rev 2 was an unmodified GIMP install, so something major changed between 2.6.10 and 2.6.11 again. GIMP has been making some pretty big under the hood changes between releases on Windows, so it appears we'll have to treat secondary point releases as essentially major version updates going forward.

I'm looking into why GIMP is suddenly displaying this behavior.

Awesome, indeed

Thanks very much for the concentrated effort to find and fix the problem. Unprecedented turnaround! Works beautifully now, as you know, and I'm deeply grateful for your efforts especially because I need GIMP for creating a piece of artwork to go into a theatre program ad.

Cheers!

Not working ...

Hi,

I still have the same problem you described.

If I drag files to GIMP the message appears:

Plug-in crashed: "file-jpeg.exe"
(X:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable\App\gimp\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\file-jpeg.exe)

The dying plug-in may have messed up GIMP's internal state. You may want to save your images and restart GIMP to be on the safe side.

If I try to open a file via File/Open it only shows .xcf files.

I deleted and installed several times now the new version GIMP Portable 2.6.11 Rev 3 and also the old version GIMP Portable 2.6.10. Still the same error ...

Could anyone help? What can I do?

THANX!

Me 2

I'm having precisely the same problem as described with revision 3 (2.6.11) on WinXP (Service Pack 3, Japanese), running Portable GIMP from a USB stick.

Same here

On a French Win XP Pro, just upgraded from 2.6.10 to the latest 2.6.11 (rev 3) but only xcf extension seems to be working.

Reverted to 2.6.10 rev 2 available at
"http://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files/GIMP%20Portable/GIMP%...".

Will have to check at home on a standard 2.6.11 install on another computer.

Could use some advice on what plugin could be the reason of that discrepancy.

On another hand, should we wait for 2.8 to fix the problem ?

Install Fresh

Try a fresh installation (delete the whole GIMPPortable directory first). If that fails, create a new topic in this forum with all the details of your install (OS version, full install path, antivirus running, etc).

Gimp 2.6.11 rev. 3 doesn't save in other file formats win 7 x64

Dear friends I must confirm that the issue on windows 7 x64 italian is what described above

I've created one file from the clipboard

Now it is saved in the gimp file format

I try to save it in jpg, bmp or tiff and I get crashed plugin errors.

I tried also to install it in the x86 directory.

I tried to run it as administrator.

Nothing to do

I removed all of the portable experiments, I tried to install it also on D: secondary drive of my pc, nothing also that way.

Finally I tried to install the windows installer 2.6.10 from sourceforge website, that works! But Why the portable fails?

Program Files?

Because you mention the x86 directory, did you try and install this to Program Files? That will not work and is unsupported.

As multiple tests on Win7 x64 and Windows XP show none of this issue, this would be a separate bug. Please create a new post and include all the details you can including the full path you are attempting to install to, version, etc.
