I have just installed Thunderbird portable to a 8GB USB2 flash drive. I have copied all the local files as detailed here...

My mails total about 4GB split across various folders.
However, when I launch Thunderbird portable edition and click on any of my larger folders it simply shows 'building summary file...' at the bottom left and seems to hang...
Is this what is meant by "Sometimes, certain profiles will cause the launcher to fail or hang. In that case, start from scratch and try just copying your mailstores (Mail and ImapMail directories) as well as your prefs.js and abook.mab files." ?? From reading that I thought it wouldn't even get to the stage I am at?

Give it time. And if you're using a USB1.1 port, you can expect to wait for a long time.

Well, using USB2 and it just sits there. Have tried just copying the mail folders etc and get the same results.
Anyone have any suggestions?
How long did you wait and was it accessing the drive during this time? My guess is that it would take 1-2 times as long per folder for TB to initially index it as it did to copy it over. I don't know of anyone else with this much mail on a flash-based device. Any idea how fast your flash drive is with reads/writes?

I waited about thirty minutes but I have actually found out the flash drive I had was faulty. I have now sent it back.
I wanted a large flash drive (4 or 8GB) so that I could have portable thunderbird and firefox on a flash usb pen and hot swap desks easily.
My mail is actually just under 3GB in total at present (dates back to 2004) and I was going to use a Corsair Voyager (33MB read, 16MB write) - would that be fast enough? Or is it likely to be unusable?
I have a Corsair Flash Voyager myself. 4GB. It's definitely fast enough to run apps on.
