CoolPlayer+ Portable 2.30 Pre-Release 1 [to be renamed ChillPlayer]

Application: CoolPlayer+
Category: Music & Video
Description: CoolPlayer+ Portable is an easy to use audio player packaged as a portable app so you can listen to your music wherever you go. You can place it on your USB flash drive, iPod, portable hard drive or a CD and use it on any computer, without leaving any personal information behind.

Note: this is a fork of the original CoolPlayer Program, this was needed to be done due to the fact it was unmaintained by the CoolPlayer Devs for about 2 years (And I, Zach Thibeau, hate to see an open-source project die from neglect :P)

New Note: at the suggestion of John T. Haller, Coolplayer+ will need a new name my first idea is MusicPlay3000 but I'm interested in what you guys would like to have the name as so if you have a name suggestion make sure your subject in your reply shows [Coolplayer+ rename] and the main post shows the name and if you find bugs just have the subject as [bug] and if you have both to contribute just use [Coolplayer+ rename][bug] in the subject field (make it easier for me to sift through the posts, final note, your submissions will be googled for results (don't want to intrude on someone's app name that they already have rights too)

Names to Consider

  • Darkbee - ChillPlayer
  • J Neutron - PA Player

contest has been closed Darkbee is the winner and he gets a cookie and a mention in the program as the guy that gave the name.

Download CoolPlayer+ Portable 2.30 Pre-Release 1 [1MB download / 1.5MB installed]
(MD5: 3403bcf4bf30c8747b13f1408baf1bc1)

Release Notes:

Pre-Release 1 (2010/15/10):

  • Updated all core decoding libraries to the appropriate version (biggest and most needed update would be for zlib)
  • the security hole in style loading should be fixed as well. Because I have no way to verify, best way is to test it and get feedback from the public

[Coolplayer+ rename]

I originally came up with ColdPlayer, it's not cool, it's ice cold. 8) A sort of nod to the original CoolPlayer. Only problem is, this reminds me of the group Coldplay, so you don't want users thinking it's some sort of band endorsement. Smile

So maybe something like ChillPlayer is better, since it keeps the same theme of the original name (and the same ambiguity) but it's also its own name too (i.e. Not CoolPlayer++, Coolplayer5000, CoolPlayerTooSexyForMyShirt-Edition etc).

coldplayer would be too much

coldplayer would be too much like an endorsement for the band Cold Play as for IcePlayer google shows an application has that name already.

I know it's not much of a contest but I've decided on ChillPlayer, simple because it's pretty cool (no pun intended) and allows me to continue and send my code to a subversion repository

Few suggestions

I came up with while trying it yesterday:

  1. we just need a skin for the playlist Smile
  2. what about removing the non-portable options (autopay on start, register filetypes, add to startmenu)
  3. doesnt play m4a but thats expected as its a non-open codec I guess
  4. the eject button does open a dialogue to open a new music file. ->eject??? imho misleading name Smile
  5. make it translatable?

Audio CD Support [suggestion]

If we're throwing suggestions out there then Audio CD (CDDA) support would be great (either built-in or as a plugin that actually works). I tried the CDDA plugin with Coolplayer+ but never got it to work. Perhaps I'm just old fashioned and just need to MP3 my CD collection. Shock

Not Necessary

Unless this is dead easy, I think any effort into this is unnecessary. Most folks when walking around portably aren't gonna be carrying their CDs with them. If they still have CDs, they'll have ripped them and put them on their flash drive.

CDs are dying quickly. I'd wager that most techie types that use portable apps don't use CDs anymore. CD sales have fallen 52% in the last decade. They fell 18% in the last year alone. And every music store I've ever been to in NYC closed within the last 2 years.

I just bought another CD.

I just bought another CD. I'm depressed that the shops are dying out.

But after I rip the disc, I don't use it. I put it on the mp3 player and that's it.

Yeah

Growing up, I had 3 friends that worked at record stores. And they'd always find new stuff I'd never heard of before. It was always a bit of an adventure with the strange band name, new cover art and liner notes to go along with some music you'd never heard before that turned out to be great. The only CDs I buy these days are from my friends' bands.

That's why I love record

That's why I love record stores, or at least record sections. Always an adventure!

I use CDs as backup

My take on it these days is that CDs are my backup for my MP3s. I'll buy CD of artists that I really like so that: 1. I'm supporting that artist, and 2. I know I have my own copy that I can choose to use as I please rather than have some giant corporation tell me how, when and where I can listen to my music. Call it paranoia but the problem with computer files is that they're just too darn easy to lose. Granted, it's not often that I actually listen to the CDs themselves but every once in a while I'll bring them out.

If it's not a feature that can be added with minimal effort then I agree, I concede it is mostly redundant.

P.S. I forget that most users use PortableApps portably. Pardon I don't always, I have them desktop app replacements, so that's another reason why I might actually have CDs readily available, but it is certainly true I don't carry my CD collection around with me on the go. Smile

well I tell you what, I plan

well I tell you what, I plan to make a desktop version, so what I'll do is add a couple of compile flags so that when PORTABLE is defined those options won't show Blum

Testing results for xp,vista,win7

I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents for what it's worth. I've tested this cool player release on xp sp2 x86,vista home x86 and win 7 home x64 and as far as i can tell it works just fine. It doesn't remember the file paths so i have to set it manually on each computer's operating system. As far as security goes,i can't tell if there is a significant vunerability or not. The app does not appear to be able to go online like some other apps do so I'm thinking it's not an issue. I cant tell if it leaves registry keys or other information on the host computer (i simply do not know how to go about looking for things like that yet). All i want is a simple app that plays my music on my flash drive. I converted my entire cd collection into mp3's & burned it to a data dvd rom to save space. I have my "best of" collection on my flash drive & this app would be perfect for playing it! Anyway just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in for w/e it's worth. Thanx for this awesome little app! Biggrin

The Source

Do you have the source for your build available anywhere?

the included skin for

the included skin for coolplayer+ will probably be modified to say chillplayer (been trying to get a hold of neorame for that) and eventually going to see about adding other styles too to match the colour scheme of the platform too Blum (optional styles that is)
