DamnVid 1.6.0 failure to download youtube-videos

After I copy a URL in the clipboard, the appropriate issues are in the main window of DamnVid. If I now click on the button "Let's go!", in the column "status" now stand the words "In progress...". But the Download don't start!!! Please give me a tip.

Best regards

Possibly the same problem here

At first, my problem was worse. Upon trying to download a YouTube, DamnVid would immediately inform me that the Conversion was done ... but, no Video was processed or something along those lines.

On a hunch, I decided to try the same YouTube URL on YouTube Downloader. Ahh HAH! YouTube Downloader would also NOT download the YouTube. I figured the URL that I got from a Blog was NOT valid.

So, I tried a known good YouTube URL on DamnVid. Finally the download process appeared to start. Or at least it says that it is in progress. But, I see no further indication that it IS indeed actually in progress. There are no Progress Bars ... no indication of how many KBytes have to be downloaded and where the download stands. No indication of how much time the download is to take and how much time is left.

So, I really can't tell for sure if the YouTube download IS actually in progress.
If the download IS in progress and this serious lack of download progress indication is the norm for DamnVid ... then DamnVid bites. Since I have Dial Up, I can't be blindly engaging in downloading a YouTube if I have no idea how long it's going to take and where the download status stands all along the way.

So, does anyone know if this serious lack of download progress details IS the NORM for DamnVid? Or is there a Setting with which I can get all these helpful details to display? I kinda of think there isn't such a Setting because there really seem to be very few Settings and functions to begin with. DamnVid seems to be - What you see is what you get.

...

Tested it a few times, and guess what? It failed miserably.

Then I tried the built-in update function (under Help > Check for Updates) and it informed me of an update being made to the YouTube module. After that update, it seems to work OK. I tried it on a few properly working YouTube links, the same ones that failed earlier, and this time it worked. Hope this info will be useful to you, and don't forget to update that YouTube module...

Btw, you should see a progress bar on the bottom, right from the text saying "Current video:". If there is no progress bar, it's not downloading/converting.

When it's done with a download/conversion, it informs you with a screen saying "Video Conversion Successful".

So yea, it works. Kinda. I dislike it (although, that's a matter of personal preference). For YouTube downloads, I prefer the 1-Click YouTube Video Downloader add-on for Firefox, over this...

My posts are old and likely no longer relevant.

Updates Required

You should always let it update the modules within it. YouTube will change their page here and there as they update layouts and such and it breaks all downloaders (including Firefox add-ons), so you then need to update. Firefox add-ons are automatically updated on each Firefox launch, so they'll be up to date. You just need to ensure you do the same with DamnVid.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Update of Youtube-Module successful

@dboki89, @John T. Haller
Big Thanks for your helpful advice. The update of the Youtube-module over the help menu seems to be the solution for my problem. After this update now the download started correctly. My last question was now, if such a update about the programm maintain the portability of the programm?

I said I dislike DamnVid

and I consider it a matter of personal preference. I could have written an entire novel about why exactly I dislike DamnVid. Of the top of my head, there are 4 main reasons, and the "need to update it's modules" (just like any other YouTube downloader) isn't one of them. Nor do I auto-update anything, for that matter. FF included.

On another note, I've been wanting to tell you the positive experiences and impressions with PA, Smile but I'll probably save that for IRC, and add some critics to it as well. Blum You do need both the well earned encouragement, as well as a deserved criticism. I hope the latter will be of the constructive kind Smile

Necessity of updating a program

@dboki89
Ok it is clear, that everybody has personal preferences. But I think, that also the Mozilla Firefox Add-on "Video DownloadHelper" need a update in the course of time. Additionally I also like this Add-on.

That did the trick

Thanks for the Heads Up, Dboki.
That worked. I updated DamnVid and the download process worked.
Unfortunately, for me it's NOT going to cut it. While it does show the percentage status of where the download is, it has no indication of how many Bytes the entire download is and how many are left at any given time. With me having Dial Up, I need to know that key bit of Info.

That said, I already uninstalled DamnVid. I'll stick with YouTube Downloader.
YouTube Downloader does provide all that key Info. I had just hoped DamnVid would workout since I could have it on my Flash Drive and NOT have YouTube Downloader take up space on my small Hard Drive.

Oh well. We win some, we lose some.

It's already on your computer!

You don't need any programs to download video's.
If you can see the video then it has downloaded already into your internet tempory folders, All you have to do is to find it and rename the file. When files go into the tempory folders they are given random file names which are meaningless - hence renaming. If you don't want to try this method, then another good option is to use "VideoCache View" by Nirsoft. It is a small program availale in zip format. I have not checked it for portability because that is not an issue with me. Anyway, this program will check the tempory folders for you & give you a list of files to choose from and ask you where to save them permanently.
It certainly beats downloading the file twice!

different possibilities to get a video

@steve gutry
I have the program VideoCacheView by Nirsoft on my computer. But with this program I only can extract and save a video file, which is stored in my browser's cache. Unfortunately I can`t convert this video file with the same program. For this goal I need another program (for instance XMediaRecode, MediaCoder, FormatFactory, SUPER...). Often I like to get only the audio stream of the video file. And the program DamnVid give me the possibility to download and convert a video file at the same time. Another good program for simultaneous download and conversion is VDownloader. By the way all programs by Nirsoft are portable and therefore also the program VideoCacheView.

Sorry, no

By the way all programs by Nirsoft are portable and therefore also the program VideoCacheView.

There are a few Nirsoft utilities that are not portable. Here's a quote from his web site:

All my utilities (except of a few very old tools) don't write anything to the Registry or to your profile folder. This means that you can use them from a USB Flash drive, without leaving traces in the computer that you use.

Only Once

Oh, I had already been given this idea over at MyOpera Community.
I believe I was supposed to search: opera:cache or something like that. Then I was able to see what all had been recently loaded.

But, I'm not talking about viewing an entire YouTube then deciding I like it and want to save it ... and then downloading it for a 2nd time. Nah. I just mean downloading / saving it from the get go on the 1st shot. I'll usually do this while I leave the computer to do its thing and I'll go Workout or something else.

Then once I later view the Video, if I like it and want to keep, I keep it. If not, I chuck it.

But, since you brought the idea up, Steve, let me ask this because I think it actually wasn't made clear back when the idea was tossed at me at MyOpera. Okay, so you find the File in the cache. You say to rename it. Are you talking about renaming just the Filename portion? Or the Extension also? What I'm getting at is, the YouTube as found in the cache will no doubt be in YouTube format, right? That's Flash or whatever format, isn't it? One would still have to convert it to WMV format or whatever format one desired, right?

Normally the filename

Normally the filename because your browser when it caches the file, will give it an arbitary filename which is basically meaningless. Occasionally I have found the files without an extension & if this happens I will normally try renaming the file with a *.flv extension which is normally what the Youtube files have. Sometimes they are mp4 files. I usually download the youtube videos so that I can extract mp3's for music practise for my church music group & for this my prefered software is Format Factory. As you will already know, you can use Format Factory to convert these files to your favourite video format. By the way, Nirsoft have another small program called "Opera Cache View".

YouTube

You totaly forgot the main one here:

http://youtube-downloads.110mb.com

Program size only 39Kb!!

It knows all native YouTube video formats: HD, MP4, FLV, 3GP videos, preview video, auto start download, skip already downloaded files, clipboard monitoring, drag & drop from IE / Firefox, proxy support, multiple simultaneous downloads, etc.

I use it a lot!

DamnVid 1.6 not working for YouTube Download - Solved?

I tried to download, no go.
I tried to update, nothing happened.
Clicked on Report a Bug within the help menu.... tada the error was revealed. A firewall (at work) was blocking the port. DamnVid uses a non-standard port.

Possible reason

It appears DamnVid uses a non-standard port for tall connections. I discovered this by trying to use the Report a bug in help.
Firewall is blocking the port.
