Application: NetHack
Category: Games
Description: NetHack is a single player dungeon exploration game, with a variety of graphical and text interfaces all using the same game engine. Unlike many other Dungeons & Dragons-inspired games, the emphasis in NetHack is on discovering the detail of the dungeon and not simply killing everything in sight - in fact, killing everything in sight is a good way to die quickly. Each game presents a different landscape - the random number generator provides an essentially unlimited number of variations of the dungeon and its denizens to be discovered by the player in one of a number of characters: you can pick your race, your role, and your gender.

So far...
* Works on Windows Vista Home SP2 w/ Administrative Restrictions
Suggestions:
* Remove ~/NetHackPortable/App/nethack/guidebook.txt -- It's just a guidebook for the game & not totally essential. Reclaim ~160 KB that would otherwise be wasted.
* Work needed on ~/NetHackPortable/App/nethack/defaults.nh -- You're leaving a little personal data there that could cause problems ( "C:\Documents and Settings\tester\Desktop\NetHackPortable\Data" is noted for Trouble Directory), all other settings in defaults.nh are commented out.
Otherwise, things seem OK... I'll see if I can break later tonight.

A side note about defaults.nh - if it's containing any data, it should be stored in Data except when it's running.
TSodden: the general procedure with things like guidebook.txt is to not delete anything unless it's a significant portion of the size, e.g. 5MB or more. For Inkscape Portable I remove inkview.exe because it's about 14MB and should not be used with Inkscape Portable (as it would run outside the launcher); however, with guidebook.txt it's a file which can quite legitimately be viewed by the user, and it's only 160KB (wow, that's a big text file!). Thus it's simpler not to meddle with the contents of the program and (b) there if anyone wants it.

I guess I'll delete it. I've already copied it to the Data directory as config.nh, and the defaults.nh in the nethack directory it just the default config file created when I installed nethack in the first place.
Dev Test 2 released
My question is this: How is this different from https://portableapps.com/node/1501 ?
I honestly don't know, save for that other one was an executable and was posted a few years back.
It's the same version of NetHack, but the PortableApps launcher is the latest. I'm using PortableApps.com Launcher to create the launcher and it's in the PortableApps format. It doesn't sound like the other is in the PortableApps format.
still can't find defaults.nh or config.nh in it anywhere and i'm trying to replace the tileset
Where would those files be in a normal install? I didn't have them when I created the installer, so I didn't include them.
um.... wasn't the last update removing defaults.nh from appdata
Yes it was. It's been a while since I messed with this. There must be a config option somewhere to specify the location of defaults.nh. My cursory look last week didn't turn any thing up. I'll look again.
UPDATE: From what I was able to find on the NetHack Wiki, defaults.nh needs to be in the same directory as nethack.exe or nethackW.exe. Try placing it there. If it works, I will add code to move it to the settings directory and back.
looking at it it looks identical to options.nh so i tried copying options.nh under the names default.nh and config.nh and no success. i would rather enjoy having a new tileset it really brings new life to this game.(if only adom had a tileset mode)
Could you post a link to the tile set you would like to use so I can test this out?
Sorry I haven't looked into this sooner, but I had a busy end of the year last year.
EDIT: I went looking and managed to find another tileset for NetHack. I followed the instructions on the page, and managed to get it to work.
1) Copy your new tileset to the NetHackPortable\App\nethack directory (I used tiles40x20.bmp)
2) Edit NetHackPortable\Data\settings\options.nh and add the appropriate OPTIONS line (I used
OPTIONS=tile_file:tiles40x20.bmp,tile_height:40,tile_width:20
for the above tileset image)3) Start NetHack and select Map->0 - Use Tiles
