Portable winamp/media player

I am looking for a portable media player, with a library....
I normally use winamp at home and have just found a supposedly portable winamp lite version 5.1 or similar the problem is that if the drive letter changes, the library and playlists look for the music files in the wrong spot, because the player seems to use absolute paths in the plalists and i assume the same in the library. I also tried vlc but it didn't have a library and the install version crashed a lot for me. Is there a plugin for winamp so that the library can stay the same or does someone have a nice portable media player with a library?

sorry if this in the wrong spot or duplicating something.
thanks Andrew

Foobar2000

foobar2000 works great for this exact purpose. And like firefox is highly customisable, see http://www.foobar2000.org/

Foobar?

What the heck... I have heard about this player but never used it...

Can you use it portably?...

If so I am going to stop using VLC...

Yes, the regular

Yes, the regular installation is portable. I'll second the recomendation too. Foobar2k is a great player.

but the library

I did get that but if the drive letter changes, my music also being on the drive, it couldn't find it anymore. I don't know whether there is a setting I am missing or maybe people are always using the same drive letter and so don't notice?

XMPlay is nice

XMPlay is nice too.

Coolplayer stops a lot when a lot of system resources are being used. I don't recommend it.

cool but

Xmplay looks good but from the forums, it seems if music is on a portable drive, files can become dead. You can search other drives but I was kinda hoping someone had made or mdified a program so that the library and playlists used something like pstart's %pdrive% so that music wouldn't become dead. Or maybe a player could some how make use of a home directory, as pstart has the option of using a home directory with the combination of its %pdrive% parameter. Maybe i will just have to make do.

playlists

Apperantly m3u8 playlists are realtively and so wouldn't use drive letters but still doesn't solve library problems.

solution

Reading other information, apperantly musikcube http://musikcube.com/ uses realtive links and would be suitable but isn't currently portable, I do not know much about portable apps but if someone is willing to help me I would give making it portable a shot.

Working on it

I'm already in touch with the author and working on it. It actually uses full paths internally, but I've written a launcher that understands SQLite and updates them. I'm planning to post the first public beta after the 1.0 Suite launch.

Awesome

That sounds great I wait with anticipation, it will be nice when a media play can remember where its songs are, so that you can just start it and hve it play music without any further clicks. Smile

solution almost

In winamp with the library, you can set it to scan a folder, by default, the drive letter is put in but you can manually change this to go up to the root folder and back to your music folder with ..\..\..\Music or similar if winamp is in same folder as music. Only problem still need to fix is the playlist is created with relative paths awsome but when you restart it, it puts in something like F:/winamp../../music. Might have found a solution but need to test it or maybe someone else has an idea. also might have the slashes the wrong way.
