Hi,
I am trying hard to find a portable Skype installation with version as high as possible, but lower than 5. For example 4.2.x something? I really dislike the new version 5.0 and want to revert to the old one. I found some portable versions on other sites, two of which didn't work properly, plus I cannot trust them. ANy help please?
The latest was 4.2.0.187. But since it wasn't a SourceForge download, they didn't keep it (I've tried a manual download based on v5's path).
But since v5 is just an improved v4, it's really a waste not to upgrade.
My guess is the user is wanting to use VodBurner to record their Skype conversations. I too was recently looking for an older version of Skype Portable as VodBurner hasn't yet been able to get the app to work fully with Skype 5.

Their homepage opens up with this line:
Thanks for pointing that out. Neither I nor I'm guessing the OP was aware of the update.
See here for proof that VodBurner was previously not compatible with Skype 5.

No, I actually don't like v5 at all - it's much slower than v4. The bigger problem is that the GUI usability dropped significantly. The contact list now takes 2 times more screen real estate meaning that I see only half of the contacts v4 could show on the screen without scrolling. Many people have complained about it on the Skype forum. Everything has gotten bigger. Skype has always had the problem with inefficient and non-customizable GUI. Compare it with Miranda, for instance.
Does anyone have the v4.2 installation file? Admins?
but still not so big problem with the 5.x GUI
Try to search inside settings and you will find that you can by unchecking some tickboxes bring the GUI to almost same as it was in 4.x
The rest one gets used to. Well my mother is 84, she aksed to bring the old version back, I was confused first too, but after few days I calmed down.
But, yes I agree, changing GUI just for no reason is #*@!!?&grrr!

Apparently you're not the only one who disapproves of 5 (I haven't really tried it yet). If you're really lucky Otto's download link for Skype 4.2 is still working.
Thanks a million!
I have to keep it there for longer, since I am getting abt 4 reports daily that someone did download it...

You are now the official Skype "old version" mirror... congrats!
