Chromium Portable???

Here's something about Chromium portable.

http://chromium-portab.sourceforge.net/?Apps/Chromium

It has several links to PortableApps.com but this app hasn't been mentioned here in a formal manner.

Any idea if this Chromium Portable is legit (been made portable by PortableApps.com) or is an offering by someone who is using your techniques?

hm

Its not official as it doesnt have a page here.
There are versions of Iron/Chromium here in the forums but they are different from the one you linked to.
Its definitively done using our tools (installer), but I cant tell how well it is done.

It works well for me, it seems to even work better than the original google chrome portable.

So much faster than Chrome AND Iron but...

Any idea how to get it to support some of the command line and INI options of Chrome? I don't want it to write cache to my USB key but I can't get it to work as it did with Chrome (and Iron before the switch away from unicode).

This version of "portable" Chromium...

It's definitely in the proper PA format but it looks like the author didn't include any of the source code. Also, there's no proper readme or documentation and none of the included files nor the linked webpage provide any method to contact the author.

It doesn't seem kosher to me...

The source is included !

The developer created some kind of launcher generator, which you can find on the same site, it's called: Chromium-Portab Framework.
If you extract this launcher generator (with e.g. 7-Zip) you will find the source-code.

After a quick look at the code, it seems to be done by somebody who knows what he is doing.

In the source it says it's developed by: Aluísio Augusto Silva Gonçalves, but no way is given to contact this developer. If you would google the name you will see this developer is reasonably active and probably will be able to contact him if you'd need.

In a nut shell, I do not see any reason why this software should not be thrustable.

I searched for the project on SourceForge...

and emailed the author - great guy.

He answered my questions and also provided me with info about the source code and where to find it. He also provided me with info on how to use an INI file to make his package work more like the version of Chrome found here. He's working on updating his app right now and will be releasing a new version soon.

I will be using his Chromium version going forward - I definitely think it's trustworthy and like I said, the author is a VERY nice guy.

Any word on this?

I would like to see an official version of this project.

I currently copy my local installed Chromium version into a new directory I named ChromiumPortable. I copied the contents of my local C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Application Data\Chromium\ApplicationChromium\Application\ into PortableApps\ChromiumPortable\App\Chrome-Bin\ and C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Application Data\Chromium\User Data\ into Chromium\Data\profile\ directories. It seems to work when use the launcher from GoogleChromePortableDev.exe. Which I renamed to ChromePortable.exe. Everything but the icons of course. The Chromium app are blue.

Is there anything else I should have done?

No Official Release

As there are never any official or stable versions of Chromium released, we can't do a portable stable package of it. Chromium is not a true independent project. Its sole purpose is to produce Chrome. So there are only unsupported, untested 'builds' of Chromium available. If the situation changes and Chromium does start releasing actual versions, we'd love to make it available portably.

Thanks for the quick reply

It seems just as stable as FireFox Nightlies. I know what you mean thou. That may not always be the case. There is a program that will check the latest build for tests passed before downloading. I think it's called ChromeNightlyUpdater-1.2.1 or something. Chromium is up to 11.0.657.0

There are those of us that live on the fringes that would like a launcher with disclaimer of course. Maybe it can say "Your Insane for Installing This" under the PA flash banner. Smile

Google Chrome

The Chromium revision matching specific Google Chrome versions can be found at http://src.chromium.org/viewvc/chrome/releases/ and http://omahaproxy.appspot.com/viewer.
I believe that Chromium 552@70801 is so stable as GC 8.0.552.237.

Can't Follow

I can't follow those two charts at all, honestly. If there is a correlation, I'm surprised someone doesn't just post a link to the equivalent actual download of each Chromium version that matches a Chrome release.

You need to build it

You need to build it yourself. The important thing is, you can build the exact same source code used in Google Chrome (without Google additions, of course).

Not Happening

It's not happening then. We don't want to get involved in building and supporting something like Chromium. Building the software is a job for the publisher themselves. As the Chromium team themselves isn't interested in stable builds, it seems a bit odd for us to attempt it.

You're better off using something like Iron which will is a test release and will be stable here soon.

How Funky

It appears that the Google Chrome Stable, Beta, and Dev releases (for windows*) are being built with the same system, but being sent to a different place # and thus are not available to download.

The build that Google Chrome Canary build correlates to is available though, weird huh? (I have my doubts that that's a "Stable" enough release to make an official PortableApp from though is it)

========= FootNotes: [would be nice to be able to use <hr> here] =========
* I didn't check the other platforms, as PortableApps.com is currently only releasing for windows.
# Or there is some other explanation for them not being in the archive of Chromium builds

The reason why Canary is available

Canary is usually a trunk build (X.Y.Z.0). Some Dev releases are from trunk too (like 10.0.628.0/70488).

OK,

I'm more interested in how we can get the Chromium builds that Google Chrome "Stable" is built from without building them from sources ourselves, as that is the main thing standing between Chromium & Chromium Portable (as far a I can tell anyway)

I think it's worth PAFing OSS Chromium! Extensions AND SPEEEEED!

I think it's worth PAFing Chromium if only because it leaves out the spying components and the updater and the branding of Google Chrome. And like I think kAlug said, we PAF Minefield Firefox/Nightlies and those aren't ''Stables''!

I'm no coder, but is it/how much ''troublesome'' is it to ''build''/compile Chromium. U r forgetting freeware GC and therefore OSS Chromium are among the fastest browsers out there! And if I can still use all GC extensions, whatnots, then I see all positive supporting factors to PAF Chromium! So watchu say to that?

Testing

The only reason we do FF nightlies is for testing. And it's a single auto-installer for the current nightly. We don't regularly updating it.

We're not going to package and release a piece of software to our regular userbase if the publisher itself doesn't release a stable version. Chromium is not meant to be used as a regular browser. We're not going to build and then support something like that.

Could we not treat Chromium builds as "Chrome Nightlies"?

Could we not treat Chromium builds as "Chrome Nightlies" and have a "single auto-installer" (for testing purposes) that downloads the latest build's "chrome-win32.zip" file and extracts the needed binaries.

Basically just like the FireFox nightlies (Minefield) are?
The biggest difference is that there's no built in updater in Chromium.

Note: FireFox nightlies are called Minefield, so most people who would use the "Chrome Nightly Builds" wouldn't be too confused by the fact that it's called Chromium.
The only problem with calling it Chrome "nightlies" is that it's on a continuous build system and there's a new version every few hours or so.

Not Really Worth It

I honestly don't think it's worth it. Nobody runs Chromium (or should anyway) on Windows for anything other than an occasional test. We do the FF nightlies because we work with Mozilla and Mozilla devs on FF Portable. Chrome has no such relationship or portable support, so it wouldn't really assist devs in finding bugs.

OK

So there's another difference (they don't support PortableApps)
Perhaps that should be rectified at a later date, but for now I guess we just won't have nightly (hourly?) support of Chrome/Chromium.

Thanks.

I've been using Chromium for a while and love it...

Faster than Chrome and just as stable if not more-so.

The author changed his website depository - new site is here:

http://crportable.sourceforge.net/

This version features a packed 7z archive for loading the app from USB to disk and then back. Very, very fast and slick.

Chromium VS Iron

Google Chrome has some extra patches which are concern users privacy (which Iron does not include them). But I could not found if the Chromium Browser has these packages or not?
