I have always noticed that question marks "?" appear randomly in my text files. All over the place in different locations. Very weird and strange.
Anyone else had this happen? What is causing Notepad++ to do this?

It could be an issue with the file encoding and non-recognised characters.

and you said Notepad++ worked fine without scilexer.dll, you see this is what I was talking about when you made your false positive report and you said you then removed it against others telling you it's a false positive. This is what you get for not listening.

I have noticed notepad++ inserting "?" marks randomly into my text documents BEFORE I removed scilexer.dll. So it's not related!
and this is the first time you mentioned this issue, I'm not going to dismiss the possibility but after you cried wolf so many times about false positives it's hard to believe you. My suggestion do a complete reinstall using the latest version of Notepad++ Portable and see what happens

Notice I said, "I have always noticed that question marks "?" appear randomly in my text files.". And I have been using notepad++ for as long as it has existed. You just said you don't believe me, but that judgment call is based on assumptions and you should withdraw it as it's a very unfair accusations and you don't have any proof to back it up.
I have just downloaded the very latest version and installed it and see if that stops the issue from occurring.
For the record, Malwarebytes have not found any malware in the latest notepad++ so I don't need to remove any files from notepad++ this time.
If Notepad++ seems to be such an issue for you, maybe you should seek other editors that would work better for you.
That is the true beauty of open source and freeware... try it and use it if you like it. If you don't like it or it doesn't work for you, then move on... Please!

You removed a file because you were too afraid that it was gonna kill your computer when it was really a false positive. Get the file back, or re-install the app.
Na na na, come on!
David Dixon, don't make false accusations based on assumptions!
I have noticed these "?" marks appearing in my documents LONG before I removed that file. I just never got around to asking about it until now!

You will only get yourself into more trouble with your name calling. Please be mature. I'm of agreement in all of what ZachThibeau mentioned in the comments above.
And If you noticed this problem before, Report the problem to the Notepad++ developers and not us.
Na na na, come on!
dave I wish you didn't comment back, it was not needed.

and have not heard of this from anyone.
Try uninstalling and re-installing the app.
Is it possible that your anti-malware software could have damaged the Notepad ++ when it falsely flagged it? If it attempted to "clean" the non-existant virus, it might have messed something up, even before you removed SciLexer.dll.
I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.
As others have said, it's either a character encoding issue or your instance of Notepad++ is somehow corrupt. I have never had any such issues with Notepad++ and it would be my recommendation to do a complete, clean reinstall.
