Why do you use portable software?

The main reason I use portable software is not because it can be run from any computer (thats diffently a plus), but because I don't have to install it, and It doesn't make useless registry keys, or add files to where windows files only should go.

whats your reasion

Yea I agree.... I do it for the same reason....I format my computer on a regular basis, so its great when I dont have to re-install everything over and lose my settings. I just copy the programs from my flash and im good to go. Smile

Freedom from the ICT guys

I am a fan of the Portable Apps Tunderbird and Firefox.

They allow me to send e-mail and surf the web from my company laptop when connected to other than the company intranet. My company laptop has been 'closed' by the ICT department so I can't install other software on it.

security hacks stole our rights

the IT folks are so worried about security threats that they've locked down all our machines. i can't install anything - including the PDA software i use to synch with my palm. this portable apps thing seems like a good solution. but let me get this straight...you can download these apps and install them on a USB flash drive without having ANY administrative rights to your machine? someone please say it's so...

Yes. You can install and use all these apps even on a limited or guest account.

You don't have to install.

Sorry John did't mean to post over you. I must have had the page up before I posted.

More info though.

All of the apps hosted here simply require them to be unzipped to a drive. They are contained within their own folder. You can unzip them directly to your drive or you can copy them over to it after unzipping them to the Local PC.

More "security" may still

A lot of IT shops are going to locking down usb ports, meaning you can't even access a usb flash drive. I hope this trend doesn't continue and is just a knee jerk reaction to data theft concerns, but just thought I would mention it.

WOW!

Doesn't that cause issues for you with FFP?

I thought I had a lot. I used to have 25 extensions, but lightened up for speed purposes. I only use 15 now:

Enabled Extensions: [15]
- Adblock Plus 0.7.2.2
- All-in-One Sidebar 0.7
- DOM Inspector 1.8.1
- Favicon Picker 2 0.3.4
- FireFoxMenuButtons 1.5.3l
- FireFTP 0.94.6
- Gmail Notifier 0.5.6.5
- GooglePreview 2.1
- Linkification 1.3.0
- MR Tech Local Install 5.3.1.1
- NoScript 1.1.4.5.061030
- SwitchProxy Tool 1.4
- Tab Mix Plus 0.3.49.061009
- Wizz RSS News Reader 2.1.6
- Yahoo! Mail Notifier 0.9.9.2

I use on a daily basis 3 to 4 different computers. At least 2 at home sometimes 3, maybe one at the neighbors house. One or two at work. Especially with tech supporting all of these computers and needing bookmarks and email everywhere, my flash drive gets a lot of work.

Gmail Notifier

I would say that GMail Manager is a better extension than Gmail notifier (Just my $.02 :))

I use Notifier because it is half the size and I just need the ability to be noified.

But thanks for the suggestion.

A little. Speed is no longer an issue because I have an external HD now. One of my extensions (it's disabled now because of incompatibility) caused the foxytunes icon not to appear. Forecastfox Enhanced had a disappearing icon problem too, but whatever extension caused it is disabled. Other than that, I have not had any real problems.

Yes. I use a few of the

Yes.
I use a few of the Portable apps available from here, mainly FireFox, ThunderBird and Miranda.

I used these as permanent apps on my local machines, so when i found portable versions it just made sense to grab a 2 gig USB drive and store them on a password protected partition instead.

Saved me having to worry about if someone else used my computer and deleted/added bookmarks etc.
Now i take my portable apps with me and use the other partition for storing my music for listening in the ute using a usb fm transmitter.

Too sweet to beat Smile

Huge thanks and kudos to john for making this all possible.

I Do it for...

I install portable apps for fun.
I haven't used them at school but will hope to.
Cant put them on the server because to view files on the server you have to know the password.
I Also hope to use them at my Nana's house to show her what else a portable drive can do (because she likes the idea to take files with her and I think that she would need to know that you can take programs to).
Thanks to John we wouldn't have these portable apps!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the Truly portable apps.

Hi;

First, thanks for making these available. They make it much easier for me to get stuff done.

What do I use every day? Firefox, VLC, and OpenOffice.

Why? Besides the fact that I prefer Firefox to IE, VLC to all others, and OpenOffice to MS Office, the thing I truly like is that as long as I have my USB key, I have access to my apps with my configurations.

Thanks
