GIMP: Mysterious Conflict

Hello, I'm having some issues running Gimp Portable.

Whenever I try to run the program, it gets to 

Querying new Plug-ins

& begins sending me numerous errors.

Specifically:

*.exe has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

Whereas the *.exe would be (I assume) every single file in this directory:
C:\~\GIMPPortable\App\gimp\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins
That's allot of errors. If I stick with it after all those errors, the application starts up, but with the aforementioned plugins not available.

Any help would be appreciated.

Directory name

Having a directory called ~ is asking for trouble. It's a special name in Linux, Unix, Mac OS X etc. Try changing it to something else (say, the default PortableApps) and try again.

That's not the directory's

That's not the directory's actual name, I just put that there to mean that it's a long named sub-directory. I wouldn't use a ~ as a directory naming convention. I'm assuming no one else has encountered this issue?

Say where

In such cases, please give the full path. That will often be the real problem. If it's long enough you may be having path length issues - try the default PortableApps and it may start working.

What Chris said. Too long a path and it'll break the app. Also, if you move it between relative paths (C:\SomeLongPath\GIMPPortable to C:\SomeOtherLongPath\GIMPPortable) that'll break it, too.

For the sake of argument I

For the sake of argument I moved the
\GIMPPortable\App\gimp\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins
directory to the desktop. No change, same problem as before. I have 64-bit Vista by the way.

Desktop Path

Keep in mind that the real "desktop" path is nested within several folders. So it's really something like:

C:\Users\Username\Desktop\GIMPPortable\App\gimp\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins

(I think this is right for Vista)

I don't think this is too long but I'm not the expert. I just thought it was worth mentioning.

That's actually longer then original sub-directory's I had it in before-

I just tried putting it directly on the C:\ drive, no other sub-directories. Didn't work.

But did you reset it when you did so? Otherwise your settings in GIMPPortable\Data are all incorrect and may very well cause the app to fail to work properly. Install a fresh copy to C:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable and see how that works.

What about trying to run Gimp in "compatibility" mode? I don't know whether you'd have to modify the launcher AND gimp.exe, probably.

I'm tempted to say that you have a corrupt install. Maybe try downloading Gimp again and install it to a fresh location.

Perhaps somebody else has further ideas.

Just tried all that... negatory effect.

I tried different compatibility modes before I originally posted the issue, but without altering Gimp. Also, I looked to see if anyone has ever had this issue before- so far as I'm aware, I'm the first.

The only other thing I could think of is that another third-party program is killing it (either intentionally or inadvertently) such as a virus scanner believing it to be a malicious program.

Other questions

What Operating system are you using?
I believe GIMP no longer supports some older Windows operating systems.
What version of GIMP Portable are you using?
You should be using 2.6.11 Rev 3.
Have you installed any additional plugins?

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

Vista 64-bit. The newest

Vista 64-bit.

The newest GimpPortable build, freshly downloaded.

No other plugins.

I've never used GimpPortable before incidentally.

Blame Vista! :)

I suppose it would be prudent to ask if anyone else is running Gimp on Vista 64bit okay? It works on Win7 64bit just fine.

One of the first things I tried (turning off my anti-virus software), however- I took this opportunity to take a closer look at some of the extra processes going on & uninstalled a number of HP & Cyberlink programs I wasn't really using, also I turned off a number of programs from starting when Windows first loads up. I could be mistaken (I didn't turn off everything), but I don't beileve that's it.

I just noticed something interesting, I don't think it did this before... If I take too long to cancel out of each of the errors I get (one at a time), then this happens:

Microsoft Windows
GIMP 2.6 is not responding
If you close the program, you might lose information.
► Close the program
► Wait for the program to respond

Out of curiosity perhaps you could try a previous version of Gimp Portable.

Two other versions tried
  1. GIMPPortable 2.6.1

    2. Same general thing happens as with the newest build, it goes to load the plugins & displays error messages instead.

  2. GIMPPortable 2.6.8

    3. Except for a single error with script-fu.exe, this one seemed to load up fine- However... whenever I try to open certain files (JPEG, BMP, PNG- GIF's files worked OK though) it gives me the usual error, plus another one-
    for example:

GIMP Message

Plug-in crashed: "file-png.exe"
(C:\Programs\GIMPPortable\GIMP268\App\gimp\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\file-png.exe)

The dying plug-in may have messed up GIMP's internal state. You may want to save your images and restart GIMP to be on the safe side.

GIMP Message

Opening 'C:\01C.png' failed:

Procedure 'file-png-load' returned no return values

Hate to Point Fingers

I hate to say this but I'm inclined more and more to blame Vista. I wonder if any other Vista users out there can report successfully error-free running of Gimp, and if so which version?

Vista SP2, Gimp Portable

Vista SP2, Gimp Portable 2.6.11, UAC turned off on admin account. No problems here at all.

But there’s no sense crying over every mistake,

Crash loading PNG

I get the same messages trying to load PNG files both with 2.6.8 and 2.6.11 rev 3.

Running from the hard drive of an XP Professional 2002 SP2 Machine.

GIMPPortable_2.6.8.paf.exe and GIMPPortable_2.6.11_Rev_3.paf.exe both exhibit the fault.

I don't have admin rights and the machine runs McAfee VirusScan Enterprise Workstation 8.5.0.781.

I am having the same issues.

I am having the same issues. Earlier I used GIMP on portable apps for a quite a long time. But now i am facing this issue. I am using a nightly build to debug it also.

I am getting following issues.

This is a development version of GIMP. Debug messages may appear here.

extension 'script-fu.exe' aborted before sending its extension_ack message
