the upgrade should be the same as all portable apps. if you are talking about the non portableapps version i recomend going to the 7zip forums.
as for MSI vs EXE i have not seen any difference EXCEPT in what can run on WINE (linux).
I checked http://www.7-zip.org/ and they say that the exe is for 32bit windows and that msi is for 64bit windows. Check out their website.
That means the question should have been pointed towards the 7zip forums or support contacts page as we only deal with the portable apps version.
(not that we cant help)
also the msi is microsofts new installer package. just like debian and ubuntu ise .deb and redhat and suse use RPM Windows vista/Seven use the msi format which is .net based if i remember reading the liturature correctly.
And Windows Installer is not .NET.

I wouldn't call "MSI" new, IIRC it was introduced with Windows Millennium Edition and gives the user more options with regards to installation, including things like "repair" which you typically don't get with a traditional exe installer. If I also recall correctly you had to download an update for ME and 2K to be able to use MSI's, whereas XP has support built in. I guess the general rule of thumb is that if you have the choice then MSI is better than EXE, but that's just a general rule that might not apply here.
But the 7-Zip exe installer is coded in NSIS, making it automatically awesome!
