I am an avid user of Firefox and most of the other portableapps software on my USB stick. Recently (since the previous USB stick and my washing machine didn't make it out together) I purchased a 16 Gb Imation and did a NTFS format.
Firefox is now so terrible sloooooooooow in responding that I don't know what to do now..It takes ages to start - the mouse seems to be frozen numerous times.
I can get a cup of coffee, chat with some friends and by that time FF has responded.
Furthermore, since my computer is blocked with administrative right, I can't dowdnload Java (and other software) and this hinders my view of other websites.
However, Google Chrome doesn't seem to have the same problem.

Did you use NTFS before? It seems that file system is more hassle than it's worth for USB Flash drives. I'm not claiming it's the source of all your problems, but it could be a contributing factor.
I formatted the old USB drive NTFS - I have also searched the forum which, if any, is better. FF is now becoming so ff-ing slow, that I want to continue with Google Chrome, but I am still hesitant in using it (matter of principal for me).
Perhaps I backup all files and reformat the USB to Fat.

It's looks still the same to me - most likely I am reformating the USB from BTFS to Fat - hope this will help
The bigger the flash drive, the slower it will be, all other things being equal. And unless you're getting a premium 16GB flash drive (read: extra $$), it will be noticeably slower than the 2 or 4GB drive you upgraded from. The published read and write speeds of the drive mean almost nothing in terms of portable software performance.

I have decided not to use FF on my USB stick again - it's to slow. it takes ages to start and ages to respond. Instead I use Opera, which is much faster and easier.

I've been through the same hassle with the same results: Uninstalling FF and trying Opera. It worked like a treat for a while and now it's just the same: Slooooooooow.
It must be something generic, not necessarily linked to FF. Has anyone any idea what it is, yet?
