There are a few unofficial portable projects for Linux that aren't licensed to repackage Firefox etc. They're a bit hit and miss. One requires you to have a runtime installed on every machine to work. Another works on some but not others. I'm honestly not that familiar with them.

I've recently installed Ubuntu on an old laptop. Expecting a little trouble with portableapps I was pleasantly surprised to find that once I associated portableapps with WINE, everything I opened from the menu also worked faultlessly.
That's by design. We actually test our launchers, menu, installers, etc for Wine compatibility and have added a few tricks to get around a couple Wine issues.

It's a beautiful design.
Got a Netbook for Christmas and gonna move it to Linux and this was the biggest question I had! Thanks for the awesome work John.
