I made a full desktop app work on a portableapps.com (by accident.)

I was just playing around with my portableapps.com standard installation, when I had decided to see if i could put some of my regular full desktop apps (IE Collection, mozilla firefox collection, as well as the emulator known as MESS, as well as ubuntu windows installer known as Wubi.)on the usb drive and make them work from portableapps.com. so i made folders with the titles of the apps original names, and put the word portable at the end of there name WITHOUT SPACES. (For example, IECollectionPortable.) then i copyed the apps and all of there data into there specific folders, then I put the folders in the Portableapps directory in my flash drive. Then i entered into my portableapps.exe and updated and then reloaded the app icons( i have portableapps 2.0 beta with the updater.) when it finished loading, all the desktop apps that i had became portable apps, and are fully functional. I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen or has done this before. And if it has , tell me if it effects any of the other apps in a bad way, and if the these new apps will suffer any problems now that there used on the usb drive. to anyone who replys, thanks.

The application is likely

The application is likely running using the original registry entries, so you will need to uninstall the original application and run a localized copy.

Try the handy revo uninstaller to remove and clean up the system in relation to that app and then go from there.

I have used the famous trillian application in this way.

On another computer?

Does it work if you take the flash drive to another computer that does not have these applications installed? If not, I agree with scant_regard's supposition that you are utilizing the existing installation's keys.

they did not become, they were

portable from begining.
What you did, makes nothing to portabilize any of the apps. Apps which are one single exe containing all needed parts are portable often, that means they will work, but we still don't know if they do store any information on the local disk, which is equally important property of a portable app.

Example you have given: WUBI
sure it works from any place, it always did as it is designed to do so. This is kind of script collection downloading and installing linux in virtual disks. It uses common parts of any windows system to do the job. You can place it where you want, the installation will take place on the hard drive where ever you point it to.
In the sense that the app runs from any place makes it for you portable, OK, but it is an installer for linux, it will need to install secondary boot manager in the system drive, then place its virtual drives somewhere and probably also download linux from the server if not available locally.
So there is nothing new or special about that, the WUBI did not become portable by your actions.

You can for example copy the notepad.exe from the system folder of any windows computer to your usb stick, this will definitely work on any other windows computer without problems.

No Magic

You can add non PortableApps.com apps to the menu but the fact of adding them to the menu alone does not magically make them portable. If they were portable to begin with i.e. they stored their settings in a file in the application directory, then this will be perfectly legitimate method of using non PA.c apps with the menu. However, if they use the registry or other non portable mechanism like user folders ("My Documents") then those applications will most likely break or at the very least write data to other PCs you use them on. (as others have alluded to).

i though so to

I tried these apps and they didnt write to my computers, or any computers directory.(ie collection and wubi did put stuff on the regular computers hard drive but they are suposed to do that.) also, i deleted the original programs and used the ones that i had put on the drive and they still work.(The one that worked the best was the Multi emulator super system, or mess, Whiched i had downloaded to my usb drive and unzipped it to the portablapps.com directory.

That's Fine

And that's perfectly fine, some applications are already portable without PortableApps.com even touching them. I use dozens of apps that are not listed here, but that are still portable. However, PA.c packages them in a standard way such that it makes updating and backing up user data much easier since they all behave in a consistent way. Basically, PortableApps.com apps are very convenient, and that is why they are desirable, plus all the guess work is taken out of the equation; you know that they are portable.

Enjoy your new "portable apps".

thanks

Yeah, these apps are mostley installers. So they don't right anything to the computers unless you save something or install the linux or ies in two of the installers.
