Disadvantages

I am an OOo user. I read the article about Portable OOo from Cnet, and now I understand its advantages.

But I don't understand the difference between full version of OOo. Though Portable OOo requires half as large storage/disk space as full version, why OOo developpers still publish full version? Does Portable OOo has any limitation or problems?

And can I use portable OOo on a memory card? I use a SD card since it has large capacity and great compatibility with laptop PCs.

Use Anywhere

As with all the portable apps hosted here, you can use Portable OpenOffice.org from any device that shows up as a drive letter (USB thumbdrive, iPod or other MP3 player, portable hard drive, memory card in a reader, etc) as long as it isn't read-only.

Portable OO.o is a compressed version of OO.o as mentioned in the modifications section. If you are curious, you can read that from the main page.

The portable version and the regular version work much the same way although Java isn't yet portable with it.

Should I uninstall my current OOo?

Thank you for your replying, John.

Now I understand the modifications which you made and its known issues. And I'd like to try this very interesting software! So I have a question: I've already have an OOo 2.0 full version, but do I have to uninstall it?

Thank you.

All portable apps

are INDEPENDENT of what you have installed locally. That's why they're portable. So, it doesn't matter if you have the same app installed on the PC you're running on.

I love it!

Now I use Portable OOo, without uninstalling my current OOo full version.

Though I downloaded and unzipped it in my desktop, I couldn't oppen it. But I recognized that I use Win XP Japanese version, therefore my desktop folder's name is written in Japanese. So I moved Portable OOo folder to C:\, and it worked very well.

Thank you John, I really love it!

Because.

All the executable files (that is, DLLs, EXEs...) in Portable OpenOffice.org have been compressed with UPX, so the unzipped size will be smaller than a standard distribution of OOo. You don't lose any functionality, though.
