Gajim Portable 0.12.1 Development Test 1

Application: Gajim
Category: Internet
Description: Gajim is a fairly solid Jabber instant messaging client written with an interface quite similar to Pidgin's. One of the features I like about Gajim is its built-in notification system similar to Pidgin's Guifications.

Download Gajim Portable 0.12.1 Development Test 1 [13MB download / 15-40MB installed]
(MD5: 730199882179755462cbc908d323945a)

Release Notes:
Development Test 1 (2008-12-29): Initial Release

Language / Protocol Notes:

Gajim is a multilingual application, and you can find the available languages in GajimPortable\App\Gajim\po if you install the multilingual package. The language can be set by editing the file 'GajimPortableSettings.ini' in GajimPortable\Data\settings (created after first run). Simply add your language code (as listed in the previous directory) on the Language= line.

The Jabber protocol can also connect to various other instant messaging protocols through transports. Some of the most common protocols I've seen include the Live / .NET protocol, Y!M, Oscar for AIM and ICQ, IRC, Gadu-Gadu and some others. Simply go to Actions -> Discover Services from the main menu and enter a server. I've found Jaim.at has many protocols available. It's fairly straight-forward to set up an account but I'll post detailed instructions on that and Gmail / Google Apps accounts later.

Enjoy!

But Wait, Why Not Use Pidgin / Miranda?

I know some of you are going to ask, "Why not just use Pidgin? It support XMPP and the other protocols you mentioned." You're totally right, and I use Pidgin myself. However, for those looking for an alternative to the crash-prone Pidgin, give Gajim a shot (however I don't know the stability of 0.12 yet). Also, Gajim supports the XMPP / Jabber protocol much better than Pidgin any many other multiprotocol clients, seeing as it's XMPP only.

Also, check out this post on transports. That's from the developer of Coccinella, an XMPP client with whiteboard integration. Also, if you're interested in XMPP I suggest you read his other posts as well.
