Hey guys...
So here's my problem.
I've been using a portable version of Google Chrome on my family's main computer, and have finally convinced my dad to let me install it natively (for all users).
I went to the Google Packs page (In Internet Explorer), and went through the process to start the installation.
Everything was going well, until it came to the part where Chrome was to be installed.
Instead of installing, however, I received an error that said, "Google Chrome has already been installed for this user. If the software is not working, please uninstall Google Chrome and download it again."
Um... I have no idea how to treat that... I thought everything was confined to a single folder, isn't it? Then how should the installer know that there's another version of Chrome on the system?
I'm really confused...
Anyone know how to deal with this?

It's possible that you set it as the default browser; if you've done this, you won't have been running it in a portable manner and it may mess things up.

Hmm... I may have done that... but it would have been months ago...
It won't be set as default right now. but any damage would have already been done, wouldn't have?
I don't remember if I did it or not... if that was the case, how would I go about fixing it?
when you go there and try to install it, is the portable version still open somehow?
yes you downloaded with ie, but are you running the portable somewhere?
did you make some updates of the chrome from the chrome itself ?
does it run somehow from other user account which is not closed?
If you manage to close all instances of chrome, then you might be able to clear all registry entries referring to chrome manually first.

I tried rebooting, and going directly to IE to install chrome, but it still didn't do anything different.
Noob question (I'm a bit more of a linux fan. registry stuff I'm not so good at)
What process should I use to clear all the registry entries referring to Chrome... I know I'd go to regedit... but from there, idk)

but when I am in such situation, I start search in regedit. The menu is there , search, type in Chrome and see first what sort of keys are set so far.
In fact in this case you might use some way of backing up the registry and then decide what keys could cause the problem. But don't blame me if the whole system crashes and never starts again if you delete some wrong key.
during the search, you can hit F3 key to continue search key ba key until it is finished.
Does Chrome not appear in the installed apps list?

Ok... I'll try that later... um... installed apps list meaning, the installed programs in the "add remove programs" thing, or which installed apps list?
If yes, then, no, it's not there...
If you're not comfortable running wild in the registry, I would recommend installing the Beta or Dev channel, then uninstall it and use the regular Stable installer
BTW: have you ever heard of Sandboxie?
(it's a program that redirects everything a program does to a sandbox and the rest of your system remains unchanged, it's good for testing things before you really do them)
If you can install it (it uses services, so its not very Portable Friendly) you might like to test things in a sandbox to see that it doesn't make things worse before you try them out in your normal environment.

Nice! I'll give that a try. sounds a bit more promising than "your computer might die and never come back"... though if it doesn't work, I'll try regedit
