Portable Thunderbird in a network

Portable thunderbird in a network

I would like use my thunderbird in a net with two pc.

So I only need to control that the main executable look for the data folder in the place I indicate.

This place will be the same folder in any case.
Can I execute twice the main executable from both pc ?

What's the best way to make TB3 to work in a local area network ?

Best Regards

might not be designed for

but it works from a mapped network drive quite well. I was using it placed on a small server, actually some NAS device, and run it from there.

I am not able to understand well. Excuse my english

Do your refer to indicate the path in the network

I have two pc.
In the first one the path is :

Y:\PORTABLES\Navegadores . Internet . Correo\ThunderbirdPortable\App\thunderbird\thunderbird.exe

in the second the mapped network drive :

\\jose-a0455092a\y\PORTABLES\Navegadores . Internet . Correo\ThunderbirdPortable\App\thunderbird\thunderbird.exe

So : Can I create a shortcut in the second pc pointing to that network path ?

yes

but first make sure you have really proper connection the external server (relative to your own machine), the drive has to be connected and mapped first, then there should be no problem in making a shortcut to the TB.

As I mentioned, for some time, I was using a home server, the TB on a usb stick connected to this home server. I mapped the drive on my computer and then could without problems execute the TBportable and run it as if it was local.

I would start to map the drive as such, before just trying to point directly to the launcher. I mean you can try , why not, but I think it might be easier step by step.
Just my own experience with my home NAS server.

OH, I see you want connect the thunderbird.exe directly??? Is this a local installation or portable one?
The portable installtion should be run from TnuderbirdPortable.exe in fact.

It's really difficult for me

It's really difficult for me follow your explanations.

A good tutorial ?

Step by step ?

Can I execute at the same time TB in the two pc's ?

I am trying at these moments to create a shortcut with good result If I proposed to allow from the firewall windows.

Additionally I am proposing as a exception in the antivirus program (avast free and avg free). Additionally in the windows firewall in the other pc.

At the present moment seems good.

ok

You want to access one copy of Thunderbird Portable from 2 PCs over a network right?

This is possible if the Paths (without the drive letter) are the same. So if on one PC the path is
Y:\PORTABLES\Navegadores . Internet . Correo\ThunderbirdPortable\ThunderbirdPortable.exe,
it has to be something like
P:\PORTABLES\Navegadores . Internet . Correo\ThunderbirdPortable\ThunderbirdPortable.exe
on the second PC. (Otherwise some addons or maybe more will not work as the use full paths internally and the Launcher only updates the drive letter).

But you can not run the one copy from the 2 PCs at the same time without leaving some bits behind.

I hope its a bit clearer now.

Okis

I've read all about .

I can run TB portable from one pc or the other in the same location or path once.

In other words. Tb portable don't permits multiple instances.

But I have now a little problem. If I have opened TB portable in the remote terminal I can't open in the local one or viceversa.

So I would need to know how to close TB process in the other pc from the local PC.

How can I do that ?

Complicated

Do number 1 and number 2 instance have different email accounts?

What happens if number 1 read email from email account A and number 2 read same email from email account A, and then number 1 delete email? Number 2 will not see it anymore next time he load.

I think you will have some difficulty this way.

You don't run at the same time? Then it is okay, but you say you want 2 instances. Maybe I do not understand what you try to do but I think this will make a lot of problems.

what I did before

was using same TB portable on a NAS server and use it from different computers.
The I had not any problems in shutting down the TB from one computer and start it again from other.
What definitely can not be done is to run the same TB from two places at same time. We have then almost the two launcher instances situation. Probably when it all starts it might go seemingly ok, but what should happen when one of the instances was closed? Should it delete all the parts it is supposed to? Or not? How to know.

But I had never problem in simply closing the TB and wait until all is cleared.

In my case the NAS was a linux gadget, never mind, the drive was mapped and so all runs local in fact even if the 'NAS' was windows PC.

If someone starts the TB on the remote machine by direct acces to it, as it is when you use some VPN etc, then the apps is running on the remote localy and it means you have simply switch off there too.

Yes

I think we're in agreement Otto. Running from two separate locations at different times is fine, but running at the same time is not fine at all. Even if we ignore the multiple instances problem, is SQLLite a transaction-capable database? Are Thunderbird, IMAP or POP3 transaction-capable? I think in the worst case you'd end up with corrupted or missing data. In the best case you'd end up with some odd and confusing behavior arising from some interesting race conditions.

What you describe at the end of your post, is this simply a local install on the remote server (NAS)? I was a little confused. In this case it's a different scenario to using PortableApps, but perhaps this is the best solution for the original poster. It almost sounds like using a telnet application and an X-windows client to say run a Linux app on Windows.

no slightly different

I was was using NAS server which had also usb socket and I had usb stick in it with some portable apps on it. OK, the basic OS there was linux, but it had enough samba on it that I could map it as drive, connect to it on start up and was then executing those portable apps from there.. from the mapped drive. This case the app does not run local on the NAS (no wine or similar there) it runs kind of on my pc then. When I close it down it is closed, temp files created here, on my PC are cleared etc.
There were 2 w2k machines and one w98se connected to this all, well the mapping was pain at beginning, but once I had hosts file on the windows machines, it started work more reliable without the need of complex set up each time.
I had TB and few other apps running so.
Note: the OS on the NAS was not even user transparent, that means I was no able to go to any kind of console, nor could just log in as root or similar. To just 'visit' the embeded linux, quite complex hacking was needed.

Most of those NAS run similar way, one has some websurface for basic config , the rest ist hidden. Place a copy of some poratbel app on it and it runs as if it is stored local. Regular apps, well this is different story, will not work this way so simple.

Thanks for the Explanation

That's interesting. I have USB ports on my NAS, but I don't think I can access them from a remote machine over SAMBA. The instructions I got with the NAS are basic to say the least but they tell me that the USB ports are in my case for backup of the NAS itself, so probably not available to remote machine (although I've never tried). I haven't heard of this situation before, but I have a cheap NAS bought from e-Bay so it's no surprise. Smile

I'm not sure if I can SSH into my NAS... again, I've never tried. I know that it has embedded web and FTP servers but they are extremely basic.

there are some

the one I was using with the stick was NSLU2, famous hacker toy. Once you find out how to reflash it, you can insert lot of different distros as OS into it, with dedicated special purposes....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSLU2

Depending on firmware in use, one can connect one hard drive and second harddrive with fat32 or usb stick etc.

But it is same on othe nas too.

You can see also this:
http://www.arp.com/b2c_arp/b2c/menuHandling.do;jsessionid=%28J2EE3423000...

has just one RJ45 and one usb connector and some power connector. So you have your stick 'online' at home.
I used it at previous work to share files and docs, simply as file server.

Read Only?

I have not tried this, and I doubt it will work for you, but if I remember correctly when you run ThunderBird Portable (or Firefox Portable) from a read only location it copies the profile to a Temp location, and deletes it from there when its done. If you are having it download messages and delete them from the server this would be a problem (the email would be moved from the server to the profile directory, then the profile [including the email] would be deleted) but if you make sure that all of your accounts are set to leave the messages on the server indefinitely then it shouldn't be a problem at all (until you run out of space on the server).
