Thunderbird 1.5.0.8: Auto update fails...

Hello there,

First, allow me to thank John for his tireless efforts bringing portable software to our computers.

I arrived at work this morning, opened Thunderbird (Portable) and was delighted to see the automatic update notification for v1.5.0.8. The partial update downloaded and prompted me to restart the programme, yet upon doing so I was informed that the partial update had failed.

Thunderbird proceeded to download the full update, however upon restarting the version number still reads 1.5.0.8.

Is this a known issue? I recall that previous versions of TB/FF would not update successfully, due to the removal of the 'Uninstall' program from the Update folder - is this still the case?

Thank you once again for your hard work - I'm looking forward to the full release of FF2.0 Portable.

Kind regards,
James

I had to attempt a full

I had to attempt a full update twice, but it worked. And, of course, make sure you have plenty of space on your drive, and don't interrupt the update (make sure you have time; ~5 min on an exHD, ~10 min for a flash drive on USB2.0, ~15-20 or more min on flash with USB1.1).

Vintage!

It should work

But for some reason 1.5.0.8 has been a bit flakey on both the local and portable sides. Usually trying again a few times seems to work. Be sure you only have a single window open in either case.

If you get stuck and it won't launch, you can install an earlier copy (like 1.5.0.7 PR3) over your updated but broken copy without losing any of your data. The in-place upgrade feature works in this instance, too.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

later or restart ...

I tried it and tried it, but the partial and the full update failed every time I tried it. I had no chance to do it. What did I wrong?

Every time I pressed the button later after the download of the update and quit Thunderbird. Then I clicked on the TBP launcher to start thunderbird; the update routine started and failed.

Then I decided to press the button restart at the download-routine after the file was downloaded. Thunderbird terminated, the launcher terminated, Thunderbird restarted without the launcher and the update was successfull.

Is there a problem with the launcher?

Yes, I have tried the

Yes, I have tried the partial and full update several times, but to no success. Following the prompt to restart, I always chose the 'Later' option, closing Thunderbird manually, then re-running ThunderbirdPortable.exe.

I have not tried allowing Thunderbird to restart itself, as I would assume this will bypass the portable loader, creating a new local profile in the 'Documents and Settings' folder.

By the way, I run all of my portable applications from internal harddrive for convenience, so slow USB reads/writes should not be an issue.

Kind regards,
James

EDIT: Well, allowing Thunderbird to close and restart itself was indeed successful - furthermore, a new profile was not created as the existing profile was utilised. I'm glad everything is up-to-date, however I too am curious as to why the update failed when using the Portable loader at a later date.

no new profile

As James says, no new profile will be created, when Thunderbird restarts itself. I have tested it a few minutes ago again. When Thunderbird restarts itself without the ThunderbirdPortable loader, then everything is fine, when I manually restart Thunderbird via the ThunderbirdPortable loader the partial and the full update fails.
