Portable Apps I use with no special Config

In addition to the Portable Suite I use:

These all work off of my USB drive without (seemingly) any changes, just designating the USB drive as the install location

Registry Settings are added for

Deepburner, foxit PDF and the ad-aware prog leaves a folder in the application data folder for the user. They add the configuration data to the HKCU\Software key, and it stays there. They do not get deleted. If they are you have to re-register/reset your options. I use batch files to add and remove the regiostry entries on startup and shutdown of the program.

A couple more...
  • Media Player Classic - Plays video files, DVDs, Real-media, etc. (but depends on codecs installed on local computer, and different versions are required for XP vs. 98)
  • MirandaIM - Instant messenger, similar to Gaim, but Windows only

Foxit Reader

is another good app, It displays pdf files, and as far as I can tell, leaves no obvious trace behind. And it is less than 4MB!

It does leave a trace

It leaves configuration settings in the HKCU\Software key in the registry. I use a batch file to import and export the info on startup and shutdown of the app. If the data is not there it will asked for you to reset up the software.

yes, but

I don't think that all that is necessary, it's just a PDF reader.

That's True

I just don't like traces, I like to come and go, like the wind...HAHA.

sorry to

burst your bubble, but every program (except John's as far as I can tell) leaves a trace in the MUI Cache in the registry when you run the EXE.

True to a point, and

I am not trying to argue with you, so, I will just say that I have a few programs on my disk that do have the some of the same features as their cousin commercial apps that leave no trace in the registry anywhere I can tell, including the MUI cache. I spent alot of time going through each program on a clean virtual machine using regshot to test and find out. I like the progs, just not leaving traces. That's all. But again you are right a good protion of the apps out there do leave them in the MUI and they are still portable, I have not problem with an app for that, I just like to find out what they are and remove as necessary.

We're good, :-)

I like spirited discussion, just wanted to make sure I didn't offend anyone. Smile

Vim

I like Vim for my text editor
gvim64.exe installed to my flash drive with only a '_viminfo' file written to my 'C:\Documents and Settings\my login' folder
I think I can change the config to write that someplace else
