Google Chrome: Does it include a way to keep updated with latest releases???

Does the portable Google Chrome app include some type of a way to stay up to date with the latest releases?

PA.c Updater

Use the PortableApps.com Platform and it will keep Chrome and all your other apps updated. We generally release Chrome Portable packages the same day Chrome comes out, so there is no portablization delay.

Chrome's normal updater is not built-in (like Firefox's is), it's a separate component that only works with local Chrome installs.

The PortableApps.com Platform 2.0 Beta 5 includes our built-in updater, so you just click Options - Check for Updates and it'll grab it. The upcoming Beta 6 release (coming real soon now) will automatically check for and inform you of updates.

ooh ok. Good to know.

There a portable version of Google Chrome that a German guy named "Caschy" made that includes an updater. You double click on "updater.exe" (or similar) and it downloads the latest release directly from Google and updates the local version, wherever it may be (flash drive, second hard disk, etc).

It cool because you can update at your discretion, and you can choose between the dev release, beta release, or standard release schedules.

The only problem is it's in german and I can't seem to change my Chrome to Enligsh in the settings (there's no option for "Englisch").

Perhaps you guys can take a look at it and come up with your own version?

It's really cool except for the language problem. I hope you guys can do the same, or better!

No Permission

The problem with his builds is that he is actually repackaging Chrome -- as in taking the files out of their installer and packaging them another way -- without Google's permission (a violation of their trademark and EULA). He repackages other software illegally like Firefox, too. And all his stuff is closed source, too, which I don't really like.

The good thing about our stuff is that it's all open source and legal. And you can have Dev, Beta and Stable tracks of Google Chrome Portable installed and all updated at once with one run of the PortableApps.com Updater.

Oh, interesting, I didn't know that.

Is there a step by step guide somewhere on how to convert your Chrome to portable? Let's say I have it installed on my computer the normal way. I've tried copying the files to my flash drive and running it but that of course didn't work.

No Need

There's no need to take your own Chrome and make it portable as we've got it all done already (with up to date versions of stable, beta and dev all available). Our built-in launcher is pretty sophisticated and even has advanced options like being able to portablize passwords.

Copying an app to a flash drive nearly never results in a portable app. There's often a lot more that needs doing, especially with something like Chrome which is very tied to the operating system and IE's networking functionality.
