I have moved completly to Thunderbird portable on my USB 2 GB device.
I got tired of synchronizing my email on the several computers I use daily.
I use email to keep track of several independent concurrent projects.
One folder per project.
My email folders are getting a bit too crowded.
I would like to be able to store away folders of closed projects in order to free up space and speed up Thunderbird, but still be able to read them from time to time.
Any Ideas ?
I'm having the exact same problem, I'm using two email accounts for two different purposes, but the amount of email is getting to big for my USB drive, so i would like to file old emails away and dump them on my hard drive so i can retrieve them later.
I guess the question is: how can i sort, and then move folders of emails to another hard drive. Then how can I access them later?
I just keep a separate copy of Portable thunderbird with the older emails on my hard drive - Just rename the folder to not confuse with the current - works well for me

someone can correct me if I'm wrong on this. TB stores its emails in a file called .msf so if you store your finished projects inside "finished", go to ThunderbirdPortable\Data\profile\.... now from here, in my case its \ImapMail\"IMAP server name"\. Inside that folder I found several diferent msf files. Just copy them to your harddrive. When you want to read one of those emails, just put it back.

Well I correct you; it's not the file with the .msf extensions which holds the mail, it's the file without extension, where the emails are in.
