I have read something of similar problems but never a real solution - when I load TB and a couple of other apps, I get the error "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert disk into drive \Device\Harddisk4\DR81, options Cancel, Try Again or Continue. As I hit Cancel I get alternating messages which are similar referencing Harddisk5. This only happens on my home PC and only started recently - my work laptop and personal laptop do not do this. The common answer seems to be "live with it" but it is annoying and a lack of fix is irritating. So I tried a few things and I look at Admin Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management and see Disk 4 and Disk 5 in the list are the two slots of my card reader. Tried and found if I put a SD card in the SD card slot then the error never lists Harddisk5, just Harddisk4. So pull card reader out and everything works OK. If I then remove USB and slot it in again, it becomes Disk 4 and works OK. If I then plug in card reader with USB still in the reader slots become Disks 5 and 6 and Portable TBird has no error. So if ANY EMPTY removable disk (since it seems to not care about HDD) is a lower Disk number, I get this error.
Why would it start suddenly, only affect a few apps (Thunderbird, Opera Portable, GIMP mainly) and how can I get rid - it is pretty annoying and I cannot see why you cannot have all things plugged in and they work!

Sounds like some kind of hardware failure to me. Either the card reader or the card itself, but more likely the reader if you say the problem only occurs on your home PC. Try getting hold of a different (external?) card reader and see if you have the same problem.
You might want to check your card for errors too. Whenever you see the words "no disk", it's generally really bad news. I'd backup your stuff from a know to be working PC as well, just in case.
Some apps have this issue with empty drives as they attempt to access them. GIMP did this for quite a while regardless of hard drive number, so with a local install of GIMP it would error on each card reader slot every time you did anything file-related. This happens with cross-platform apps as other platforms don't show the drive to apps if it is empty the way Windows does.
I was under the impression that card readers that are properly configured will not have this issue under current Windows versions, but XP the solution is just 'live with it' or disconnect the card reader unless you're using it. When I was on XP, I just kept it disconnected unless I needed it.

I have the same problem. Since today. Never before. I do not have a card reader. No USB port has been used recently for other hardware than my stick. I can open documents, but no exe files. I am stumped.

I've started getting this, too.
In my case it's looking for a disk in the floppy drive.
It can be mitigated by, er, putting a disk in the floppy drive.
I've got an idea it might be linked to a MS update but can't test the theory just yet (update re KB2419632).
The problem started on one PC and has started occurring on others (apparently after an MS update cycle). Could be a nasty but I dont think so.

What about disable floppy drive on BIOS?
I now think it may be related to the Behavioural Shield in Avast anti virus.

There are a couple of other threads alluding to the same issue.
My issue has now changed - something - possibly Avast still looks for a floppy disk but now i don't get the dialogue box - Thunderbird starts up OK.
This behaviour occurs on any machine I try and use Thunderbird on - all these machines run Avast.

I am running avast also on all private machines and no such behavior comes up.
so there must be something more to it, so far I did not get this problem , so hope best still
