FirefoxPortable 2nd Profile path problem

I tried to use FirefoxPortable 2nd profile with Firefox 4 beta 10 which is installed in FirefoxPortableTest folder.
I found a file FirefoxPortable.ini in which there is a setting "FirefoxDirectory=..\..\FirefoxPortable\App\firefox" so i changed it to "FirefoxDirectory=..\..\FirefoxPortableTest\App\firefox" and tried putting it in different folder but no matter where i put it it wouldn't work.
So i removed the file and renamed FirefoxPortableTest to FirefoxPortable and it worked and now i saw the FirefoxPortable.ini is supposed to be in the Data folder so i edit it there and rename my FirefoxPortable Folder back to FirefoxPortableTest as it should be and again it didn't work...
So apparently there is some part of the path in the second profile app that is hard coded or there is an option i didn't find? This doesn't bother me much but i think it would be better if that path was configurable.
Thank you

FirefoxPortable Only

It's designed for FirefoxPortable only. FirefoxPortableTest is only available for specific limited times (while a Firefox Beta is going on) and then retired again, so it isn't designed to work with that. As Firefox will be going stable within the next couple weeks, you'll soon be able to use 2nd Profile with FF4 by default Smile

Aaaaaaa i see. I have been

Aaaaaaa i see.
I have been using the beta of firefox 4 for more than half a year Smile that's not so limited time... hopefully the next firefox version will have less betas Smile
But what if someone wants to rename their FirefoxPortable folder to something else? Then the 2nd profile launcher will not work with that either...

Right

And when they download and run the FF installer, it won't find it automatically (they'll have to manually select it). And if renamed, it won't get updated by the PA.c Updater either.

The big reason with the beta length was the transition from a smaller 3.7 release to a bigger 4.0, it seems. I think we'll see more frequent smaller updates going forward.

Which leads to my next question...

I found this thread when searching for a solution for my current situation.

Right now my stick has three Firefox installations:
Firefox 2 in PortableApps\FirefoxPortable
Firefox 3.6 in PortableApps\FirefoxPortableLegacy36
Firefox 4 in PortableApps\FirefoxPortable4

I want to add a second profile for Firefox 4. However, it's my understanding that, if I install the FirefoxPortable2ndProfile app, I'll end up with a second profile for Firefox 2, which is not what I want.

It's important to keep my Firefox 2 intact and save my settings. When I tried renaming the FirefoxPortable directory, some things didn't work right, and I needed to change it back. I'm uncertain how to fix that.

I suppose ideally I would like to rename the directory containing Firefox 2, so that I can use the PortableFirefox directory for the current version of Firefox. I understand that will allow me to have a second profile with the current version of Firefox, and will also allow the updater to recognize and work with that version.

Searching through the messages on the forum, another solution suggested by somebody is to simply install Firefox 4 again in another directory with a different name. It seems to me that the advantage would be that, when I'm ready to try out Firefox 5 in the future, I could upgrade my "first profile" without having it affect the "second profile." On the other hand, that second Firefox 4 installation would take up more space, and I'd have to keep manually updating it. Are there other pros and cons I should consider?

Reset 2

You can reset your Firefox 2 instance by deleting the Data subdirectory. This deletes all associated data, of course, but you can preserve your bookmarks.html and cookies by saving those associated files. You can back it up first to be sure. Then rename FirefoxPortable to FirefoxPortableLegacy20 and rename FirefoxPortable4 to FirefoxPortable. It should be noted that Firefox 2 shouldn't be used for anything anymore due to security issues and the fact that it's not really necessary to test websites for it due to low usage numbers (under 0.2%, less than Netscape 6).
