I know this has been said before, but I haven't heard anything in a while. Dropbox is suppose to get ride of the need for flash drives, but my work PC will not let me install Dropbox, so a portable app would be great! The Dropbox API has been out for a while.

However I still could not understand how it should replace usb drives. It is just folder sync utility tied to certain server service.
So if you come to a computer where there is no dropbox, you have to download all from the server first, apps run on local system not from the server itself.
Or you have your apps on the stick inside the dropbox folder, so when you use them , they will be synched with the version on the server at the end (stick again needed). If you have no dropbox, you can download all with the aid of a browser, but you have to download it all first, run locally and push it up again.

Otto's point still stands though: What do you gain by using Dropbox?
I have a dropbox account myself and I've thought about putting my portable apps on it so that I don't have to carry around my flash drive. However, I have no idea how long it would take to sync up the 2GB's worth portable apps that I have on a new machine, and what if I couldn't? Granted it might be okay if I'm just using it between two fixed locations e.g. work and home, but in my case I like and tend to keep those two sets of apps distinct.
I'm not opposed to your idea, I'm guess I'm just saying, convince me.
The reason why I like Dropbox is because as a student I might need a file wherever I am. If I forget my flash drive somewhere it is nice to know that anywhere I have access to the internet I will have my files. I dont use dropbox for portable apps.
Okay, so how will you run Dropbox portable? From a flash drive? What happens if you forget your flash drive?
I'm assuming you want it for those occasions where you don't forget the drive, for the convenience of not having to download and then re-upload files manually? If you have a dropbox portable "drive" then you can make changes and have all the uploading and downloading done for you. Is that where you're coming from?
From this perspective, I agree that Dropbox portable would be handy, except in my case I think my Dropbox account is bigger than my flash drive. (sad but) True story.
That's exactly what I want. Most days I will have my flash drive with me, but on days I do happen to forget it, I like to know that my files are automatically stored on the Dropbox servers.
have just normal drive here, no u3, use dropbox with it fine, no problem at all
just use search feature of th eforum, you will find number of threads on it

There are a couple of portable versions around the forums, but in my experience they have been troublesome...since they still add the context menu entry, this makes removing the drive after quite a pain. The only way (AFAIK) to remove this kind of explorer hook, is to restart explorer. Not always a viable option

I have here, it is some older version Dropbox 6.x and it is in paf format but has no splash when starting and it does not produce any context menu entry. It has some copy of some appdata folders on board and does not leave any of those anywhere.
I have it definitely from the test forum here.
