How's about making CDB-XP Pro portable?...

The thread title sez it all.
What are the possibilities, folks, of y'all coming up with a version of CD Burner XP Pro (the free version, natch) that is "portable"?...
I asked this question on the application site's board, but got this response:

"Well, I think currently we are not. But once a new version is released, this may change"

My response to this was to say:
"Well, given that the next versions are going to be for ".NET", how is that do-able?...
I mean, I'm not a programmer, but it seems like the best way to make any app portable is to use the simplest available version of the proggy to work with. And, if only a .NET version is made portable, it won't be all that, er...."portable", since it likely would require the machine it's used on to have.NET enabled - and no one I know personally cares that much for .NET in the first place."

So anyway, John/others, whattaya think? Are U game? Are you up for the challenge?

Looking fwd to y'all's responses on this...

2 Things...

1. To be even considered, programs must be open source and free.
2. Please post a link to the program you are asking for.

::cough, cough:: OPERA ::cough, cough::

hey, wsm23,

One other thought on item #1 that you'd raised earlier:

Er, the Opera browser ain't open source, so how in the world did THAT get "portable-ized", eh??...

(or didja simply mean that for *portableapps.com* to consider portableizing it, it must be open-source?...)

Curious,

Hold on...

@ rmccue
You wrote "To be legal."

Hold, it; d'you mean to say that Opera USB and the other portable Opera (http://www.kejut.com/operaportable) are "illegal"?...

It was

It was an illegal distribution in the beginning, since Opera Software had not given them permission to make it. Later on, they gave permission to one of the portable versions (there are 2) but I'm not sure about the other.

CDB-XP?

Preacher,

I thought your question was about CDB-XP?

What does Opera have to do with that program? Illegally modifying a program because it has been done before is a poor reason for doing it again.

You are a newly registered user and was trying to be nice about the terms an policies of this site and the forums.

John T. Haller runs things around here. There are a few members that help out with some development and unofficial forum moderation. Again, I was just trying to direct you.

It can get frustrating to read the same type of requests over and over again, that have the same issues with making portable, like:
1. No info about the program.
2. No link to the home page of the program.
3. The program is not open source.
4. The program is not free.

Ahem...

@ wsm23:

"I thought your question was about CDB-XP?...What does Opera have to do with that program?"
==============
1) Yes, I was asking about CDB-XPP.
2) However, you wrote that a proggy has to be Open source; so I (later) cited the fact that Opera USB wasn't, and it's been portableized, which fact is at odds with your initial claim, this muddying the issue.
4) You clarified that a proggy has to be free & OS to LEGAL. I'd always thought that OperaUSB *was*, in fact, legal, and John piped in to cite that ONE of it's iterations IS, whilst the other he's unsure about. So I was at least half-right in thinking it to be legal..

" Illegally modifying a program because it has been done before is a poor reason for doing it again."
====================
I hadn't any idea - until you & John piped in - that Opera USB WASN'T a legal proggy, so your reasoning above does not apply here.

"You are a newly registered user and was trying to be nice about the terms an policies of this site and the forums"
=====================================
And I appreciate it, but apparently a bit of clarity is *also* in order, and that's what this dialogue is accomplishing - at least for me.
And btw, I must be missing something here, because I didn't see anything to click whereby I could read what the ' terms an policies of this site and the forums' even ARE. Can you direct me to that?. Thx.

"John T. Haller runs things around here."
========================================
That I'm clear on. But rather than bother him directly, I thought I'd throw my queries into the forums.

"Again, I was just trying to direct you."
=========================================
Much obliged, sir.

"It can get frustrating to read the same type of requests over and over again, that have the same issues with making portable, like:

4. The program is not free."
=============================
I understand, and now I'm clear on the fact that I need to post links & info about any such future things I request. And, do whatever homework I can do to try and ascertain whether a proggy is free/OS.

Forum guidelines are posted at the top of each forum.

There is also a more detailed one @ https://portableapps.com/forums/guidelines

John,

Is there any way to post that set of guidelines at the top of each forum. That one seems to cover things the best. People may not click on the general discussion forum before posting. A lot of them just go to the specific forum that they are interested in.

"Forum guidelines are posted

"Forum guidelines are posted at the top of each forum."
==============
Yes, but that's fairly short and not really helpful

"a more detailed one @ https://portableapps.com/forums/guidelines"
==============
This one's much more helpful, as it covers far more bases. Perhaps THIS is the one that should be posted as a "read before posting" at the top of each forum, as you seem to be requesting that John do. I second the motion.

However, for the "Request Apps" board, would need to add the caveats that the proggy requested must be free and open-source.

It is

Whenever anyone posts a new topic, there's 2 sentences at the top of the 'create a new topic' page directing folks right to the forum guidelines. There's only one link in the paragraph and it's red and bold and says 'Forum Guidelines'. Try it and see (well, don't create a new fake topic).

Thanks John.

But, I know you and others will still be fighting those who don't read anything before posting.

guidelines...

@ John:

=============
Didn't see it when I first posted; only saw/read the one I mention below. I notice now that it says "Updated 11/14" (the day after I created these threads).
Can I assume that the update was done after this conflict broke out over my posts w/ wsm23, or was it ALways there, and I just missed it (if so, what exactly was updated?)?...

@ wsm23:

"But, I know you and others will still be fighting those who don't read anything before posting."

I clicked the first item I saw mentioning guidelines, and the link lead me to the "short version" you cited yesterday.

No

It's been there for months. That's just the last time the guidelines were updated (to add a warning about illegal software due to a user I just had to ban).

You wrote "Uses .NEt... "

Not so. The earlier versions - up to and I beleive INCLUDING v3.0 - do not use .NET. It is the more recent versions that they are planning on writing for .NET...
