Replaces Firefox version on Hard Drive?

Every time I use Firefox Portable v.1.5.0.8, or if I haven't updated, v.1.5.0.70, it replaces my version, which is the new 2.0, that's already on my hard drive, with whatever version of Firefox I have on my U3 Drive, and I have to re-install Firefox 2.0 to get it back onto my hard drive. Is there a way to fix this?

Launcher

Are you talking about the U3 LaunchPad?

FF for U3 or Firefox Portable?

They're two different programs.

Didn't Know

Oh. I'm new to most of this stuff, and I'm still 'learning' how to use it and stuff. So, if the launchpad and launcher are 2 separate things, what is the launcher?

Are you launching

Wait, are you trying to launch your LOCAL copy *while* Firefox for U3 is running? If so, it just spawns a new instance of the currently running Firefox. Once closed, it'll work as normal. This is the way Firefox itself works.

Also, moving this to the U3 Apps forum since it's the u3 app and not the open portable app.

No

Actually, I have my U3 drive password protected. So what I have been doing is that I turn my PC on, and log in. Then, I insert the U3 drive, and type my password in. After it logs on, I click on the little U3 icon on the task bar to open the launchpad. I have no other programs running, so I click on the icon for "Mozilla Firefox for U3" and Firefox opens. However, I also have the new version of Firefox on my hard drive. So apparently, every time I run Firefox for U3, then try to run the version on my hard drive (I use version 2.0), it is 'replaced' by the version that I was using on my U3 drive, which is 1.5.0.8, and all my fav's and stuff for Firefox 2.0 are gone, and are replaced by the ones I have on 1.5.0.8, as well as my addons and themes. Could the name of a file on the U3 drive and my hard drive are the same, and my U3 drive replaces the one on my hard drive with the one on the U3? Sorry for the long post.

Did you close it?

Did you *fully* close Firefox for U3 *before* launching your local copy of Firefox? (Double-check task manager to be sure Firefox has fully closed first) Like I said, if the firefox.exe from the U3 package is still running, it just starts another copy of that rather than launching your local one... even if you're clicking the icon on your local PC.

Incidentally, you're using Firefox for U3 that has the PortableApps.com splash screen right?

Yes

Yes, I closed it, and if I'm done working with the U3 drive, I always make sure that none of the U3 programs are running, and eject it. Even then, it still replaces the copy on my HD with the U3 version whenever I open my HD copy, even though I have the U3 drive unplugged from my USB port. Yes, I am using the one with the splash screen.

Somehing Must Be Up

Something really odd must be up on your system or your U3 device. I wrote the code that runs Firefox for U3 and the behavior you're describing is impossible... at least from my code's prospective. At no point does it copy either Firefox or the profile used within Firefox for U3 to the local PC. It copies a total of 3 files, all used internally by U3, to within the %APPDATA%/U3 folder and that's it. No more, no less.

Is this perhaps caused by an auto-update to the 1.5.0.7 of Firefox for U3 that's going *very* wrong somehow? If so, don't let the U3 one attempt to update.

Maybe...

Actually, v1.5.0.7 was the one I downloaded from the U3 download central website. It's not because of an update. It's the one that I had downloaded from the U3 download central site. I just went to help, and check for updates, and downloaded v1.5.0.8, however the update was suspiciously fast to download and install. Could it be the %APPDATA%/U3 folder is somehow missing, or the update is causing it?

Found Something Out

I just found something out. Apparently, whenever I open Firefox for U3, v1.5.0.8, it asks me whether or not to set it as the default application. Whenever I click "no", close it, and open the copy I have on my hard drive, it is still v2.0. Could it be that I'm setting v1.5.0.8 as the default, and that is possibly changing the default program on my HD? It does this even if I click "yes", close the U3 version, eject the U3 drive, and try to open the copy on my hard drive. It's as if it 'imports' the extensions, themes, bookmarks, etc. to the one on my HD before it closes or something.

Don't Update?

Maybe if I were to not set Firefox as my default browser, or just not update it, would that work?
