Google Chrome 9.X just got declared stable.

Is 10.X already stable, or is it really still beta?

When starting Google Chrome Portable there is an error message "Your preferences file is currupt or invalid. Google Chrome is unable to recover your settings."
Deleting the whole folder of Google Chrome Portable and reinstalling it anew does not help. There is still this error.

Offhand I'd guess you're running on a NTFS drive with improper permissions. Please make a post in the support forum for additional questions (this is a news story comment).

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

I wanted to use portable Chrome and install certain extensions, namely the personal site blocker.

Total Fail.

1. portable chrome loses all extensions when the USB stick is uninstalled.

2. portable Chrome loses all stored passwords when the USB stick is uninstalled.

This makes Google Portable Chrome useless.

It's hard for me see past my disgust - I have looked for answers, but there doesn't seem to
be any.

Anyone with a more objective view have any clues?

(I'm particulary disgusted after spending a half hour adding a long list of web spamming
urls to the personal site blocker extension - just to have Chrome lose it all.)

Passwords in Chrome Portable aren't portable unless you enable portable passwords. This is mentioned right on the Chrome Portable homepage and details are in the included help.html file. The reason for this is that Chrome itself has no encryption features builtin and uses IE's for that, so passwords are usually encrypted for a specific PC and will not work on other PCs. The launcher has a feature that will unencrypt them and then encrypt them using a portable technique with a password you give it.

Extensions generally work just fine portably. There are a few oddly-written extensions that will break, though.

Chrome is not portable.
The left-handed monkey tricks with passwords and the supposed
fix only shows that Chrome is broken as a portable app.
You wrote yourself that the password function is dependent on
using the same machine as the hashing is machine specific.
Even if the password mechanism worked from go this fact
breaks Chrome as a portable.

The Personal Web Site Blocker fails in portable Chrome.
Yes, it installs but (as I wrote) it is not retained when the
USB stick is unmounted. This is reproducible on barious OSs
and mcahines. I'm not going to keep re-typing all the sites
I want blocked every time I open Chrome.

Fortunately Google released Personal Site Blocker for use in browsers
other than Chrome. You do need to be logged into a google account, but it works
and, more importantly, is portable.

Chrome is not portable.

Are new threads started with every beta release of Chrome?
Should I post this also in the general forum?

You complete misread what I wrote. If you enable portable passwords with the INI switch, *passwords are portable*. The launcher handles this for you. Then your passwords will work on every machine. The launcher decrypts and re-encrypts them for you automatically and just asks you for a password to do so on launch. So, yes, passwords, most extensions, etc are fully portable as are all your bookmarks, cookies, etc. As is the browser. Seems you just found an extension that is NOT portable. So, don't use that extension.
