This feature may be redundant, stupid, or even hilarious, but what is the possibility of allowing the user to change the PAM icon in the tray? Grant you the current icon is nice and simple, but what about using the flashdrive icon you for the drive its self, or even an icon of just a usb plug?
Please excuse me if this was asked before (even by myself, can't find my post)
Is there support for categories or folders in this beta?
I can't find it anywhere.
Hi,
I just used version 2010-10-28 of the PortabelApps.com Updater.
I do not have to repeat it's great (it really is ), but there are 2 items I miss (they were also not located in the update.ini file)
1) determine the location of the downloaded files (absolute or relative)
2) determine if the downloaded files must be kept or erased after installing (I like to keep them)
Without some more information no one can really help you.
What do you mean by it isn't working? Do you double-click the executable and nothing happens or is there an error of some kind? Or do you mean it doesn't auto start when you plug in your usb drive (if it is on a usb drive)? Did you move the directory after installing?
Any extra information you can give will help us help you.
one thing that I have noticed with the apps in general is that they don't really interact with each other. For example, the documents downloaded in portable Firefox don't open with portable OO.o. I would really like it if the applications used each other by default. Is there a way to do that in this release or will I have to wait?
I just wanted to identify that the Java portable is not in the updater coverage. I know why, I think, it's different than the typical app in a couple of ways.
BTW Very nice work. I have been using portable apps for a while. I have been using as many as possible in lieu of installed apps on my relatively new system. Houskeeping is alot easier this way.
Please read the whole thread before commenting - it's been asked three times already in this thread (and is noted in the Java Portable release announcements).

[Bug] Previously mentioned, but new data regarding uninstaller
Just adding my confirmation of the bug Chris mentioned on July 21 2010 regarding the uninstaller window sticking around if you switch windows/programs while it is running.
I have reproduced this bug on two machines running XP SP3, and have a little more data to add.
The first time you uninstall something and switch focus to another window/program, the mentioned effect happens: the uninstaller message window sticks around, but does not hinder the use of the Platform after the uninstall has actually completed itself.
And here is the new info:
The second time you uninstall something, with the previous window still hanging around, the prompt window ("Are you sure you wish to uninstall program x portable" or whatever the actual wording is) will appear, but the buttons cannot be clicked and the buttons also do not show their shortcut keys (did not test at the time whether the shortcut keys actually worked, but the underlines on the O in Ok and C in Cancel were not being shown). Only after focusing elsewhere and refocusing on the prompt would the shortcut key underlines appear.
While the buttons themselves still were not clickable at this stage, the shortcut keys would work.
After the second uninstall has completed, both message windows disappear (or is it that the second uninstall hijacks the first window, and then removes itself properly?).
Okay. I know that you guys over at portableapps.com probably get a million requests a day just from IMs, so I don't expect a reply the next day. I just wanna get some ideas out.
Well first off i'd like to suggest a portable icon launcher. I know that there is this program in the BETA section of the forums, and it's wonderful, but it's function's and usability would be a lot easier if it were part of the PAM. The link is https://portableapps.com/node/17634
Then there's the portable desktop, which is also in the Beta section, and would also function better if it were part of the PAM. link: https://portableapps.com/node/22090
For the themes, they're a wonderful addition. I would just like to make the "Change Theme" menu a little more like a window/ and a lot less like a right-click menu. Maybe it could show a thumbnail of all the themes installed, along with an "Install theme" button and a "Delete theme" button much like the mozilla suite. (Firefox, Thunderbird, ect.)
Finnaly there's the ability to change/edit the folder buttons on the side of the Menu. At least change, if not add buttons, anyway. There have been multiple posts searching for this feature. I'm hoping that someone will also implement this into the Menu at some point.
I understand that the PortableApps team is probably really busy just finnalizing the PAM 2.0 but these are just some things that I'm hoping will become possible in the near future. If anybody reads this post, please reply with your ideas. I've searched the forums, and the internet long and hard, and I don't see any alternative that is easy to do as an unexperienced coder/programmer. Mojo pack and all the other programs I have looked into, but I feel that it would be beneficial if PortableApps.com added these features.

Its been awhile and beta 6 isn't out yet. I saw your the last status update saying you were pushing for it.
There have been no new status updates since, even though there were supposed to be one around every week.
I'm not trying to be annoying, I'm just wondering whats up? Did I miss something?
Would be nice if we could have a status update.
Normally if I close all of my PA.c applications then right click on the tray icon and choose "Eject", all works as expected.
However I've noticed that after one or more apps has been updated using the "Check For Updates" utility, the next time I try to eject the drive I get an error message saying that the volume cannot be stopped right now.
I don't think it is anything to do with the updater because I get the same error message even though I have not run the updater.
On my Windows 7 (64-bit) system if I exit the PortableApps.com menu and then try to eject the flash drive by right-clicking the drive's icon I get the error message. If I just click "Cancel" to remove the error message, wait two or three seconds and then try again the eject operation works properly.
That means an app or other process was still running at that point. When you close Firefox, for example, it isn't immediately done writing to the drive. It takes a few seconds to write out your last session information, etc and then after firefox.exe closes, FFP launcher waits a couple seconds and then finishes cleaning up the local PC if FF left anything behind. When the window is closed doesn't mean the app is closed.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
For some reason (on XP systems/computers I've used) the open process doesn't need to have been run from a USB device, just started from a program/process there.
eg: I'll be using Firefox Portable (off a USB memory stick) and download something with Orbit Downloader (a download manager which is installed on the computer).
Even when Firefox Portable has closed down (and I've looked with Process Explorer to make sure it is fully closed down), my computer will not 'eject' (or safely remove device) the USB memory stick while Orbit Downloader is still running. If I close Orbit Downloader I can eject/safely remove with no problems.
For some reason, it seems like if a process (in my example, Orbit Downloader) is started from a program/process being run off the USB memory stick the computer/operating system treats that process as if it is running via the USB memory stick.
ps: just removing the USB memory stick (instead of ejecting/safely removing hardware) while Orbit Downloader is still running has no effect on Orbit, so it seems there is nothing Orbit Downloader is doing that uses the USB memory stick.
If you have a file on your USB drive open in an app, either local or portable, Windows will not allow the drive to be safely ejected. This is by design at the OS level. You shouldn't just pull the drive.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
It works It's awesome i like that you can change the theme and it starts my apps with no problems *right when you plug it in it starts the portable apps platform*
I doubt that its going slow because of PA.
Your USB probably has slow read/write speed.
Updater, updates your apps AKA: Downloads updates AKA: Writes.
Using a app like a web browser, it is constantly reading and writing to the USB.
Things you can do to improve performance:
1. Buy a new, faster USB
2. Optimize the drive for performance (You will have to safely eject the drive before unplugging it. Google it for more information.)
3. Formatting to NTFS may improve performance. (Reduces USB life. Google for more information.)
Is there a silent mode/command line switch I could use with Updater to automatically update installed apps without displaying any GUI? I'd like to use it with Windows Task Scheduler.
There is a silent mode for it to check for updates that will be called in conjunction with the PA.c Platform if you have it set to check for updates on start. In that case, if everything is up to date it just closes (never showing a GUI) and when there are updates it comes up as normal. It's supposed to show a GUI so that users can close out of their apps before the update process runs and know when it finishes so they can use the apps again.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
your release dates have always been perfectly timed, and of course any dates that you may have mentioned that did not turn out to be correct or even close have obviously been light-hearted jests, meant to entertain and amuse us while you work tirelessly day and night to perfect the menu.
How much time does that compliment buy us?
I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.
Dare I even admit that I have actually been testing the latest and greatest?
I have some gripes but I don't want to come off as PAM bashing. Overall though, it leaves a positive impression. Definitely an improvement, and the update feature is pure gold.
But the biggest disappointment i have (and i think a lot of other ppl) is missing the CATEGORIES option in every release, and nobody seems to care even tough many of us even begging for it!
I would like to see the option to select all/none in the updater menu when choosing which to install, is this possible?

This thread was started July 16, 2010. This date also marks the release of the latest beta (beta 5) version of the menu witch in my view offers noticeable improvements from beta 4.

Will this version of the Suite have some security features. Like Anti-USB Sniffing or a password start (when you plug it in it asks for a password before you can use the drive)
Password would be pointless as it would be trivial to get around. The simple fact of the matter is that there is no easy software solution for security. It's best to look with USB flash drives with built in security hardware if it is a concern for you.
This is not a complaint (I do not want a month added to the schedule!), but as the one year anniversary of the last release approaches (Beta 5), I wonder if PA is still in development. That said, it's near perfect as it is, but folders/categories is sorely missed.
There is a link at the top of every page which gets updated to point to the most recent Status Update every time a new one is posted (it's worded like 'PortableApps.com Status Update ([yyyy-mm-dd]): [Short description of updated progress]')
I have noticed that if you try to uninstall an app and then click away from the "Uninstalling [app name]" window the app will uninstall but the window will stay open.
Everything works fine if you don't click away from that window.
I don't think the original post has been updated in a quite a while.
Hopefully soon with the release of 1.9/2.0 beta 6 there will be a new, slightly more manageable post, this one is just bloated because it is almost a year old.
I don't know if this has been brought up before but please modify the installer of portable apps so that they install by default into the directory in which the setup has been started. Example:
I download Firefox Portable to D:\Downloads. I start the Setup and I then come to the install location dialogue (default: "\FirefoxPortable") where I have to manually navigate to D:\Downloads to extract it into this folder ("D:\Downloads\FirefoxPortable"). That's a bit annoying.
Why not have the setup recognize the current directory (in this example: "D:\Downloads") and let it install there by default (which means that the default install location would be "D:\Downloads\FirefoxPortable" and not just "\FirefoxPortable")? This would be a real time saver, especially when installing multiple portable apps.
the installer auto-detects an existing portableapps.com platform. Everything else has to be done manually.
I think that s good way to go as some people might download it to their desktop and install it to the usb drive so installing it to the download folder automatically doesnt make much sense to me.
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
In the absence of a PortableApps menu, the installers will install to X:\PortableApps.
So, in your example, if you download FirefoxPortable to D:\PortableApps, then when you start the setup it will extract automatically to D:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable, no navigation necessary.
Actually, no matter where you download the file, it will default to the X:\PortableApps directory. Why not just have that as the normal location for your apps? I would think it would be more logical than installing into your Downloads directory. Most Downloads directories either end up being used like Temp folders, or become a mix of useful files and mistakes (I call it my junkyard :))
I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.
I am running the 2.0 beta from my portable hard drive, and it refuses to save my settings for Firefox when I shut down. Every time I start it up it asks me to set my default browser, I tell it no and to never ask again, then I put my tabs on bottom and set it to not record history. It immediately stores my history anyway, and whenever I load a theme or add-on, they are gone the next time.
Edit: forgot to mention I am running Firefox 4.0, but the issue was still present when I had the latest version of 3, and the 2.0 suite.
Sounds like you have firefox.exe running directly and associated with something on your system. Be sure you are only ever running FirefoxPortable.exe directly or starting it from within the platform.
This is not a platform issue so if it still occurs, please create a forum post with complete details.

SPECS:

For some reason the PA.c Platform wont auto start. When I plug the USB flash drive to the computer, all I get is the windows autoplay dialog window asking me what to do next. [e.g. Open Folder, Do nothing, print pictures, view slide show, etc...]
--The PA.c Platform doesn't start on the background, nor does it show on the windows autoplay dialog--
The PA.c installation looks fine to me. I don't get why the PA.c doesn't auto-run. Any help?
Love the Beta Version, especially the updater... I have quite a few apps installed with my suite and it gets hard following the programs updates etc. So the updater idea is brilliant!
I have a couple of suggestions for the beta which I would find useful, it might help others too!
Dynamic update feed:
Maybe a small scrolling bar below the logo which informs people of New/Updated apps that are released via an RSS feed.
Install New app (via Listing):
Similar to the Updater except that it will list ALL of the apps that aren't currently installed so that the user can install new apps via the updater program without having to navigate to the website etc. Maybe to help with costs people see an advert until the download is complete?
An option to add Custom Apps to the list.
If a user has an application installed that they would like to have neatly incorporated into the menu without needing to install everything into the portable apps directory e.g I have other programs (such as uTorrent) which run portable already and to save hassle (and because I'd installed it before I installed this) would like to be able to list it into my Portable Apps suite so I can open it from there.
- Allow us to manually add programs to the menu... not everything gets auto-detected (see next bug)
- Putting a program in a sibling directory to PortableApps.com works, but sub-folders under this do not. This affects those of us who want to keep a nice tree of programs:
x:\PortableApps
x:\PortableApps\SomeProgram - detected
x:\PortableApps\Chat Programs
x:\PortableApps\Chat Programs\Portable Skype - not detected
x:\PortableApps\Chat Programs\Portable Pidgin - not detected
x:\PortableApps\Browsers
x:\PortableApps\Browsers\curl.exe - detected
x:\PortableApps\Browsers\Portable Firefox
x:\PortableApps\Browsers\Portable Firefox\firefox.exe - not detected
...you get the picture.
Would love to see the ability to create a proper file tree (very useful outside of PortableApps launcher), as well as adding things manually - especially with a field for command-line options.
The problem with this is that apps can't be easily upgraded. You'll need to manually change the path from X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable to x:\PortableApps\Browsers\Portable Firefox in the installer *every single time* you do an upgrade. And it won't work at all with the PortableApps.com Updater or the new built-in Portable App Directory. That makes the platform far less useful.
Categories are coming within the menu itself, which makes organizing lots of apps useful. There's no reason to organize the app directories hierarchically like that.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
One: It should be set up to automatically detect new themes in the themes folder and add them to the list and to have spaces in the list.(there are no spaces in the theme names!)
Two: To let themes affect more.(change positions and height of various objects etc.)
Three: Allow it to change the icons on the desktop to your apps, documents etc.
Four: When opening the music, documents etc. folders to open it in it's own file explorer that can be affected by the theme.
Five: To set the computer program defaults to the installed apps when Portable Apps is running and to open files in the documents, music etc. directories with the apps set to proper defaults.
And six: To have dialogs for the "Advanced options".
(None of this is meant to say that Portable Apps is bad in any way )
It has almost been a year since the last 2.0 beta...
I wish there was at least a RC available...
I wish I wasn't STILL disappointed about this project.
I wish somebody started a similar project
I wish that this project could be taken over, so John could have more time to himself, and to the core stuff of PortabApps (which i still consider one of the best around!)
I wish i would be willing to donate more $ to portableapps!
Well, CU next year! (when the next 2.0 beta will - hopefully - be around!, if ever!)
There are several. PStart, umm... I used to know of a lot more. Basically any launcher/dock that is portable will work.
XSLordI wish that this project could be taken over, so John could have more time to himself, and to the core stuff of PortabApps (which i still consider one of the best around!)
It could be, if somebody were willing to lay down $1000 for the latest Python (or pirate it) and then find the source code to the platform on SourceForge (I found it once, for an earlier version, but spent about half an hour looking for the latest a couple months ago, and could not find it). But it would be better if it were just ported to an IDE that is free for all to use.
This feature may be redundant, stupid, or even hilarious, but what is the possibility of allowing the user to change the PAM icon in the tray? Grant you the current icon is nice and simple, but what about using the flashdrive icon you for the drive its self, or even an icon of just a usb plug?

That's exactly as I had it happen. Multiple windows of the same dimensions with stay-on-top and no-extra-taskbar-icon set makes for utter chaos.

I haven't observed this myself. In such a case, you can look at any handles open by opening Process Explorer and searching for the drive (i.e. "X:").

There's no death. But every time someone complains, a month is added to the release date.

John's release is never late, it arrives specifically when he wants it to

Minus one week
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
That being said, I AM excited to see the next beta!
During the installing stage of the updater an error message appeared saying "One or more errors occured while attempting to update your software".
Yes i couldn't care less about a next release!
But the biggest disappointment i have (and i think a lot of other ppl) is missing the CATEGORIES option in every release, and nobody seems to care even tough many of us even begging for it!
Well you should care about the next release.
Apparently it will be out later this week and should include categories.
Otherwise Santa T. Haller will just leave us coal.
I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.
With the drop in temps here I would not a ton of coal at least I would be warm.

Yes and Santa does exists duh...
If this is already been posted, sorry.
I would like to see the option to select all/none in the updater menu when choosing which to install, is this possible?

Sorry for saying this, but i am really very disappointed about the lack of development on this project, for me it now reached the state of VAPORWARE!
Why not ask if anyone out there would like to take it over, and do some real development!
To my believe nothing real has been changed in the past year, and i don't believe that 2011 will bring any changes!
On the other hand the roll-out of new portable application is going great!
This thread was started July 16, 2010. This date also marks the release of the latest beta (beta 5) version of the menu witch in my view offers noticeable improvements from beta 4.

What's wrong with ppl like me - is that we are just a little bit disappointed with the pace of this project.
Once again, if one compares it to the release op portable apps, pac is really really slow!
And why does it take ages to implement categories, something ppl have been bagging for a really long time?
(btw i am one of those who have donated to portableapps.com, which i still think of being one of the best project aound!!!)
works great. It works on different systems and various flash drives, portable HD's and internal HD's.
It's does what it's supposed to do.
Is it "perfect"? Does it cook your dinner? Will it create World Peace?
probably not, but I don't care. It does what it's supposed to do. And as time passes it will do more.
Complaining will not fix things you wish were there. It only bores people.

Will this version of the Suite have some security features. Like Anti-USB Sniffing or a password start (when you plug it in it asks for a password before you can use the drive)
Cman
Password would be pointless as it would be trivial to get around. The simple fact of the matter is that there is no easy software solution for security. It's best to look with USB flash drives with built in security hardware if it is a concern for you.
This is not a complaint (I do not want a month added to the schedule!), but as the one year anniversary of the last release approaches (Beta 5), I wonder if PA is still in development. That said, it's near perfect as it is, but folders/categories is sorely missed.
benway6: I wonder if you have been reading the regular (and frequent) updates?
Latest one here: https://portableapps.com/blogs/johnhaller/2011-03-04_status_update
Ah, didn't even know this page existed, thanks. I have to admit this forum is a bit difficult to find your way around in...
There is a link at the top of every page which gets updated to point to the most recent Status Update every time a new one is posted (it's worded like 'PortableApps.com Status Update ([yyyy-mm-dd]): [Short description of updated progress]')

Can't find where to setup proxy, so can't get updater working.
It's fine, especially the theming engine and the Updater. It's very handy
I have noticed that if you try to uninstall an app and then click away from the "Uninstalling [app name]" window the app will uninstall but the window will stay open.
Everything works fine if you don't click away from that window.
This bug has already been reported a number of times in this thread.
While I agree that this thread is quite a long read, it is kind of necessary to read through it all before reporting platform bugs.
Sorry about that.
I just figured you would have it in the list of known issues if you already knew about it.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
thats amaziiiiiiiiiiiing
SPECS:
-PC OS: WINXP SP3
-USB device: Verbatim 4GB. I got it brand new and then formatted [FAT32] the drive to eliminate all the crapware that came in it. Moreover, during the formatting, I renamed the drive to something I can recognize.
Any help?

Thanks for the hard work
The updater works grate
Great updater!
Better when possible with silent mode
Dynamic update feed: this is not likely to be implemented, as there is already an RSS feed, see here: https://portableapps.com/feeds/general
Install new app: this is coming shortly, see here: https://portableapps.com/blogs/johnhaller/2011-04-27_status_update
Custom apps addition: already possible, see here: https://portableapps.com/support/portable_apps_suite#addingotherapps
Note: are you aware uTorrent is available in PAF format? see here: https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/utorrent_portable
Hi,
I think it's great to have a badge notification on apps icon if update is available like the way iPhone notify for new app update.
Something like this...

Just though I have to mention
Hi there,
GREAT work. 2 suggestions:
- Allow us to manually add programs to the menu... not everything gets auto-detected (see next bug)
- Putting a program in a sibling directory to PortableApps.com works, but sub-folders under this do not. This affects those of us who want to keep a nice tree of programs:
x:\PortableApps
x:\PortableApps\SomeProgram - detected
x:\PortableApps\Chat Programs
x:\PortableApps\Chat Programs\Portable Skype - not detected
x:\PortableApps\Chat Programs\Portable Pidgin - not detected
x:\PortableApps\Browsers
x:\PortableApps\Browsers\curl.exe - detected
x:\PortableApps\Browsers\Portable Firefox
x:\PortableApps\Browsers\Portable Firefox\firefox.exe - not detected
...you get the picture.
Would love to see the ability to create a proper file tree (very useful outside of PortableApps launcher), as well as adding things manually - especially with a field for command-line options.
Cheers for the good work!

Browser? Don't you mean the Menu? (The main part of the Platform)

John's replying to that user's comment, which references X:\PortableApps\Browsers
There was a typo in my post. I fixed it and forgot to say so.

Hi.
Downloading and installing the updates should work simultaneously.
Portable Apps 2.0 is wonderful!
But it could still use a few mods,
One: It should be set up to automatically detect new themes in the themes folder and add them to the list and to have spaces in the list.(there are no spaces in the theme names!)

You mean Delphi, right?
