I've just posted a pre-release of Gaim Portable 2.0 Beta 5. New in this version:
- Gaim updated to 2.0 Beta 5
- Vista compatible launcher and installer
- Added support for Aspell spell checker (if you have it installed locally, just copy the contents of C:\Program Files\Aspell\ to GaimPortable\App\aspell\)
- Fixed issue where Gaim conflicts with locally-installed GTK+ 2.8
- INI file updated (so you'll need to update yours if you use one)
Gaim Portable 2.0 Beta 5 Pre-Release 1 (Multilingual)
Please give it a try and drop a note back with what you find.
I've installed a copy on my USB Flash Drive. OS is WinXP. Set-up GMAIL Chat & AIM accounts. Works like a charm.
Since it's multi-language I'd like to clean-up the languages that I'm not using to save some space
There will be two packages when it's released, a US english and a multilingual. You can delete any locales you don't need within GaimPortable\App\gaim\locale and GaimPortable\App\GTK\lib\locale.

I made a copy of my existing gaim portable directory and used the standard "drag, drop, replace" upgrade method, and it seems to be working with all my settings in tact. I think the startup time is slower than previous versions though (I'm using USB 1.1). It also looks... duller than previous versions, is this so with the official gaim or did you choose a different GUI scheme? Asides from these little things functionality is perfect though
Just installed it on my usb pen drive and all seems fine so far. Installer seemed to take its time though but that could just be this pc.
any cahnce files can be zipped so I can download zipped files - as my firewall at work will allow zipped but not exe files

For testing, I'm just doing installers (since the installers are being tested, too). And uploading twice as much would require twice as much time (joys of a 384kbps upload connection). But for the actual release, I'll most likely be doing ZIPs, too.

I receive the following error after double clicking the GaimPortable.exe Icon.
It gets to the splash screen and an icon is put in the tray.

running windows XP.
Let me know if you need any other information.
Can you try running it directly? (ie, run gaim.exe) It will use your local PC's Gaim settings, but it may help diagnose the problem.

This application has failed to start because intl.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

This probably means that GTK+ can't be found.
Forgot about that. Have you ever run Gaim on that PC before? Any other portable versions?

Yes,
I actually made 2.0b5 portable using your old launcher and directions I found on GAIM's website
Actually made a post about it (https://portableapps.com/node/3682)
Then when I saw your new version I just deleted the one I made and tried to run yours and got that error.
TK, ASpell, and GAIM have all been removed from this computer though.
So I went out and found in my documents and settings folder about gtkfilechoser or something to that effect and deleted it. After that delete it works.
On a different topic, is there an easy way to get upx to do all files including subfolders? When I went about creating the portable version I had to do each sub folder individually
Any idea how that file wound up in your Docs and Settings? I've tested the new release alongside local Gaim, Aspell, GIMP, Gnumeric and GTK+ 2.8 without any issues.

Only thing I can think of is that someone had installed GIMP I then installed GAIM (non portable) which might have had a new version of GTK, and that was causing it to happen. or it could have been from different versions of GAIM being installed at one point.
This is a shared machine so I am not sure how anything happens on this thing.
It's OK so far... my only complaint is that it took over 7 minutes to install. That seemed unusually high. (XPPro,sp2,2.4ghz, 512mb)
It is a bit over 36mb (this is the multilingual package) with over 1,000 files in 330 folders, so it should take a couple minutes to install on an average speed drive. If you have a slower drive (we're talking write speeds of small amounts of data, not overall) or are connecting via USB 1.1, it would be much longer.

I installed it over the existing GAIM. It seems fine but will only be able to test it later tonight as messaging in blocked at the office.
I use on Windows XP Pro.

Ps. Thanks for all the hard work John!
I've notced that some fields do not display all the charaters.
For exmple when specifying a proxy server the last number is not displayed, i.e. xxx.xx.xx.xxy, then y is not displayed.
The same happens on some of the cancel burron on the buddy icon window as well as the last character of the first directory.
It ssems that the area in which the font is displayed is too small or the font used is too large.
Not sure if this is a portable problem or just a gaim problem in general.

Paul
Hooray! Thanks John! Gaim is working great. I was getting kinda tired of using 3.1.
Only problem was when I went to add my avatar, it tried to look in G:\ instead of K:\, which gave an error. I clicked ignore or whatever and haven't had any other errors.
Can you add Aspell support automatically in the official version? I had to drag my current Aspell folder over into Gaim.
Also, what are the prospects of having 1 GTK folder for both Gaim and GIMP? My 1GB drive is getting kinda full and that would help save a little.
I dont know if its the prob with Gaim or the portable but it took a lot of time to open the buddy icon select dialog. Is it happening with everyone. I tried with MSN

remove the *_* from your signature. It will widen the forum too much. (You could keep about 3 or 4 there though.

For a while now my google talk has not been loging on at all. I know that I still have accounts with it because I have been using the Gmail +Talk page to chat with my friends. Does anyone else have this problem?
When I type an 'l' in a chat window its appears yellow instead of black. If I press space after the l then it goes to black.
