Firefox 4.0 portable hangs occasionally

Hi,

I am running FF portable on Windows XP for 3 years now. I upgraded to FF 4.0 some days ago and experience hangs when showing PDFs or downloading files.

FF just hangs and never comes back, I have to kill the process.

I tried the following to get rid of the problem, without any success.

1. Run FF with an new data-directory
2. Run FF in safe-mode
3. Run FF from a network share
4. Run FF from a local drive

The problem is, that I cannot reproduce this every time.

I get this problem quite often, when downloading the xpi from here: http://pencil.evolus.vn/en-US/Downloads/Application.aspx

I get this problem occasionally, when downloading JRE from http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/index.html

Does anybody have the same problem? Maybe this is due to the anti-virus NOD32?

Regards,

Stephan

Wrong place to ask

I think you should probably pursue your issue with those pencil.evolus.vn folks since they are the ones who made the package you are using.

I'm not gonna argue about the legality of that package (it wouldn't matter to them, you, or most anybody else) but you should get the legal version from PortableApps.com and if you still have a problem, we can try to help you out.

That's not the problem.

As I mentioned above, I have a problem with FF. The links were just ways to reproduce the hangs.

I never installed the pencil-addon because FF hung before that. And as I also mentioned above, the problem exists even with a blank data-directory and in safe mode.

Btw. Could you explain the legal issues with pencil for me, please? I was not aware of any legal problems. Licence ist GPL.

Oh, an add-on

I didn't understand that it was an add-on, not some version of Firefox you were downloading. Even so....

The page says it is for Firefox 3. Are you trying to install into Firefox 4?

Same problem

I think I am experiencing the same issue with the new FireFox 4. It actually was happening frequently with the older version as well. The program hangs for as much as two minutes, before it thaws out and will work again. I suspect the add-ons are causing it, but don't have time to go through all the plugins and add-ons to see if it makes a difference. I went back to Chrome, but keep FF for a few things I like better. But I sure understand what he is saying about hanging up.

FF4 and pdf

I am too experiencing the problem with FF4 (lokal) and pdf-files. If you use the repair function of Adobe Reader X it will work for a while.

This seems to have nothing to

This seems to have nothing to do with Adobe X as I am using PDF X-Change-Viewer. But I am experiencing hangs there as well.

I am not trying to install

I am not trying to install this add-on. FF hangs, if I just want to download the xpi-file. Same with Java RE.

NOD32

Did you try to deactivate your antivirus program to see if that fixes the problem?
I don't use NOD32 but with MSE it hangs occasionally, mostly after downloads, but sometimes just when I click a link that tries to open/download a file that would be tested by its engine. That is not easy to reproduce every time, espacially with the same links.
If the respective file is blocked by the antivirus engine during its analysis, ff may not respond for a short while (but should come back after it is ready).

Same problem, less severe

Having issues too, with Firefox 4 portable. Not heavy, but it does have some hangs of up to a minute every now and then, apparently mostly on pages using lots of Java. Not sure if it's the machines I use, these are quite powerful XP Lenovo desktop systems w/ 8GB RAM, 2,8Ghz dualcore, but only with normal user rights and seem to have USB 2.0 ports. But maybe it's missing Java or somesuch on these machines causing it - I don't have any Firefox hangs on way slower machines, so I'm guessing my issues are software related.

not possible to deactivate NOD32

Sorry, I can not deactivate the anti-virus over here without administrative rights.
