Seeking Feedback

As the title states, I'm seeking feedback. According Mediafire's stats, this has had 100+ downloads at the time of this post, so testers please let me know what issues you have encountered.

As much as I'd love to think I got the fundamentals right first time, being my first app I expect there will be various bugs and inefficiencies.

PortableApps.com dev gurus, sink your teeth into this and tell me where I can improve the portable launcher and installer.

Thanks Smile

Some Initial Feedback

I forgot I had downloaded this and just got around to installing it.

Anyways here it goes: I have a bunch of dvds that I ripped into X:\Movies in VIDEO_TS form. I haven't been able to get Ember to do anything. I tried to add the folder to the watch folders, but it won't let me hit the ok button. I tried to just hit the Update Library button, but that causes the program to freeze. So basically I haven't been able to use the program. That said, I did find a major portability issue.

No settings are backed up. I don't really know how the program works, but it looks to me like you should be moving at the very least AdvancedSettings.xml and Settings.xml to the Data folder. It looks like all the launcher does is set the exe. No settings are moved or adjusted for drive letters. It doesn't look like it creates any registry entries or folders, but I didn't look to hard. You should really look at backing up settings before you release this again.

EDIT: I tried to see if I could figure out what was wrong on their site, but apparently it has been suspended, do you know anything about this?

Under stuttered development.

Sorry for the extremely long wait on an update. Ha a lot of things going on in RL. Have the changes to make on my primary task list. Thinking this weekend will do the changes.

Any word from devs on how to implement require changes would be appreciated.

Help?

As Devo stated, this package does not currently backup the settings.

Can someone outline how I go about achieving this?

I know (90%) I need to edit the launcher.ini however I don't know how to go about this.

@Chris Morgan: If you have any updated "beta" documentation I'd happily have a go at it.

Here goes

I'm not gonna lead you all the way through this, just providing some feedback. Chris's dev manual is located at:
http://portableapps.chrismorgan.info/launcher/manual/
and it refers to some of the features which are found only in the latest beta of PAL.

Files created after running EMMP:

X:\PortableApps\EmberMediaManagerPortable\App\Ember Media Manager\AdvancedSettings.xml
X:\PortableApps\EmberMediaManagerPortable\App\Ember Media Manager\JobLogs.emm
X:\PortableApps\EmberMediaManagerPortable\App\Ember Media Manager\Log\errlog.txt
X:\PortableApps\EmberMediaManagerPortable\App\Ember Media Manager\Media.emm
X:\PortableApps\EmberMediaManagerPortable\App\Ember Media Manager\Settings.xml

Know that you can always ignore error logs and they should stay in App. Since this is a simple files move between App and Data, your launcher.ini should at the very least contain a [FilesMove] section, with lines like filename.ext=%PAL:AppDir%\AppName.

[Launch]
ProgramExecutable=Ember Media Manager\Ember Media Manager.exe

[FilesMove]
AdvancedSettings.xml=%PAL:AppDir%\Ember Media Manager
JobLogs.emm=%PAL:AppDir%\Ember Media Manager
Media.emm=%PAL:AppDir%\Ember Media Manager
Settings.xml=%PAL:AppDir%\Ember Media Manager

I'm not sure about App\Ember Media Manager\Images\Genres\Genres.xml file, and there might be other files as well in need of moving. That's up to you.

I haven't checked where it stores paths to your movies. If stored as absolute paths, once you find them they should be portabilized with something like:

[FileWrite1]
File=%PAL:DataDir%\filename.ext
Type=Replace
Find=%PAL:LastDrive%\
Replace=%PAL:Drive%\

Glad to see you start developing apps. Smile Regards.

My posts are old and likely no longer relevant.

Path changes

In order to ensure "true" portability (allowing for changes to the path), I would also suggest having another FileWrite section, this time replacing PAL:LastPackagePartialDir with PAL:PackagePartialDir. See Here

Need more info?

I'm not certain quite what you're asking about, is dboki89's stuff enough or are you wanting something more from me?

@Devo

Thanks for the feedback and sorry for the delays.

With regards to the base app, I haven't experienced any trouble.

Ensure you have Recognise VIDEO_TS Folders selected within the Settings>Movies>Files and Sources window.

Suspended Development

Due to issues with the base I have decided to suspend development on this portableapp until further notice. I use the base app and am subscribed tot he dev news feed so as soon as I feel it is stable I will resume development of this port.
