LibreOffice 3.3.2 (final) installation findings

Hi, I am very pleased that you are also supporting LibreOffice on PortableApps.com ! And it's very nice you provide us with a multi-lingual version. But I do have some issues with it, and ofcourse they were to be expected. It's not criticism but please see it as feedback for improvements.

1) LibreOffice is much slower starting up then OpenOffice. I don't know why since it is based on OpenOffice.

I like to report on my findings while upgrading LibreOffice 3.3.1 to 3.3.2 :

2) The progress bar of the PortableApps installer doesn't show any progress while removing packages of the old LibreOffice version. This must be a bug.

3) LibreOffice has problems with long path names. I know this is known, but it causes LibreOffice not to be able to read templates. The content of any folder below data > settings > user > template > 'category name' will not be red. I tackled this problem myself by cutting/pasting the content of sub-folders (templates) into the folder up one higher.

4) The experimental option to have the installer only upgrade the default English plus your selected local language and thereby saving 200 MB disk-space worked very well, it did just that. No problems.

That's all I have for report, so on the whole that isn't much at all considering the size of LibreOffice !

Different Versions

The last OpenOffice.org is an older release than current, which LibreOffice is based on. The only way to release an updated OpenOffice.org in portable format is with permission from Oracle trademark folks and they haven't given it to anyone.

You should install to X:\PortableApps\LibreOfficePortable or a shorter path name. Longer than that and it's longer than the standard Windows file access APIs handle for the longer paths inside LibreOffice. This is unlikely to change.

There is no progress during removal of files of the older version being upgraded. Unfortunately, nothing can really be done about this.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Different Versions

So, that would mean that when OpenOffice next version is released on PortableApps it will possibly be slower at starting up than the previous version ? That's typical.

Anyway, I am moving away from OpenOffice since it was bought by Oracle, and stopped qualifying for the 100% GNU/GPL. I am not confident at all that Oracle at some time isn't going to make OOo proprietary by releasing some payed version, or even drop support for it completely once they create a new marketing strategy for their products. Already I have been experiencing many occasions that after installing extensions you will automatically get redirected to their payed products page.

On the installation location: I did install to X:\PortableApps\LibreOfficePortable
This is the path specified by PortableApps, eh, by you no ?
I will just have to live with this, I am happy that LOo is included in PortableApps.

Thanks for your reply Smile

Hmm

If you used that path and are using either FAT32 or NTFS for the drive, the templates should work without issue. It's not FAT is it?

It is...

It is Fat32 that my USB uses. I do have to admit that I have a great number of templates. After reducing the path length manually as specified above I can use them. But also after upgrading to the latest LOo loading times take forever. LOo will freeze numerous times before becoming usable. OpenOffice portable is still faster, although also OOo will freeze several times. It kinda reduces the usability of the program since in a working situation time matters. If loading the app takes long when all you need to do is adjust the date in a document... You get the picture I think.
