identities - using diffente email addresses

I have just installed thunderbird on my sandisk cruze pen stic and it has been upgraded to the latest version 3.1.9 i think.

I think what i want is different identites but i may be getting the terminology wrong.

i want to be able to send emails with different identites some time i want to send an email while i am in one folder (my camera club folder) and have its return email address be such that it goes back into that folder. and people know who it is nad it will be handeled byt their spam filters correctly. and not come from the default email address which people may not have in their spam filter white list.

other time i want to do it from the inbox and have a diffenternt identity (my normal email address).

i have set up one account but i dont seem to be able to switch identities or even select a different signature.

do i have to set up fifferent accounts with the same send and recieve servers info but with different reply to addresses?

or am i going about it in the wrong way?

thanks

not so simple

you can not use same account, same smtp server, but different e-mail addresses. Or better say, you can do that, but your mails will be rejected by the smtp account or if not they will be deleted at the recipients server as spam.

For longer time now, I think it is now some 4 years or more, mail servers are set up to accept mails which have same domain in their address as the mailserver the mail was delivered with.

So, yes, you can use different addresses in the from: field, but this address must match to the smtp server you are using at that moment.

With other words: for each mail address separate smtp server, unless all those addresses belong to the same domain.

When having different smtp servers set up, you can choose which one you like when creating the mail.

multiple emails/sigs ...

I am not sure what otto meant, but I've been able to have different emails and accounts on my one thunderbird profile since forever.
I click on or choose the email address I want a response to come to, and if I have different signature listed, it switches to it.
Each separate signature is typed in the account settings for each email address.
As for different smtp for outgoing, at least for me with my university account, I have only one outgoing smtp, email.usc.edu and that works for all my emails from usc and other non-usc emails accounts.

sure can be

but you will hardly find any mail server today, accepting mails coming from a mail server with different domain then the senders mail address indicates. For over 4 years now no such thing is allowed here in europe, I do not think this is possible still elsewhere.
You can set up your TB to do so sure, your smtp might be flexible so it will send the mail to net, but doubt that the recipient will get it.

Therefore if you use different identities, you should have also smtp going with each of them.

If you send me a mail via your email.usc.edu and your address in the from field is not of the usc.edu domain, I will never be able to receive it, as I will not be able to find an e-mail provider allowing me to receive it. None of the providers I know, freemail or ISP, will accept such mail. The kind one will send an error back, others will just flush such mails.

flexible enough ...

my university smtp must be to let me send my usc, gmail, hotmail, dolphins-cove emails out using my usc smtp. I've had verification that they've received them.
Biggrin I've never had to choose which smtp to send from.

Though now that I think about it, I've seen add-ons that deal with multiple smtp's and about how to choose the right one. I've glanced at them but never needed to install them.

I always figured that it wasn't needed as I thought that if each email address needed it's own smtp, it would be listed in each Account under the server setting section in thunderbird, as opposed to having a separate smtp drop down waaaay at the bottom of the Account Settings.

Is it a US only thing?

harryg, maybe you should look into those add-ons to help since you will probably be having multiple smtps.

identities

i only use the one email account.

I just wanted to have a different email in signatures and different reply to addresses, all the same email account, i can have multippy mail boxes on the same domain.

i have now set up different identies and can select the one i want from a drop down box when i am composing a message.

it would just be nice if a particilar identity could automaticly linked to a specific folder.

so if i send an email while in the folder named photo_club then the photo_club identity is automatically selected.

but it works if not as smooth as i would like.

thanks for the help everyone.
