Surprised you have the time to use this at work! But seriously, are you sure a work-based PC would be up to the job? You might also find you had some serious issues at work if you used even half of the stated features without authorisation.
Have you tried this program to see what it does to a PC when installed normally? I did find the following on the website:

As a minimum, any PC you run this on has to have the following installed:
- DirectX
- MS Visual C++
- Windows Media Player 11 (must be installed separately if not already installed)
- MS SQL Express OR MySQL (If you wish to watch TV using MediaPortal)

This has been requested a few times already, but I would definitely love to see this as a reality. I have ripped all my movies to a portable drive but only have access to media portal on my main PC. I also bring my collection with me to friends places and would love to bring the movies as well as the MediaCenter. It is nice to be able to browse through the cover art and read the synopsis when trying to settle on a movie for everyone to watch. For me I don't use it to watch TV (I only have 3 channels).
I was reading through a few threads and Zach Thibeau mentioned that he had this done. However that was a few years ago already so it was not done with PAL, and it would be an old version of MP.
It amazes me that on the internet you can be anything you want, and yet so many people still choose to be idiots.

I know that your probably right *hangs head in sorrow*. But... at least let me dream ;-)... Except for the TV Card req's, which IMHO TV would not be necessary in a portable version. The HW dependencies on any machine where you would want to watch a movie, really should be a non-issue. Both of my PC's (and all my Friends PC's) fit the HW bill no problem. In fact, almost any modern PC will surpass the HW requirements. As for SW dependencies, these would not really be an issue either. (I'm thinking as I type so bear with me)...
IMO the idea of a completely and truly portable MediaCenter is not really necessary, in so far as not leaving anything behind. It's not like I would walk into a Internet Cafe, Library, School etc. and expect to be able to watch my movies on a big screen TV. In the unlikely event that I ever needed a movie fix in any of these scenarios. I would just browse my drive for a movie using windows explorer, and then watch it using Portable VNC.
Anywhere that a MediaCenter like MediaPortal would be "required", the user would likely have full admin rights, and not really care if .NET etc. had to be updated/installed. Now before anyone goes off on a rant, I know that this type of "portable app" does not fit in line with the PortableApps.com philosophy.
I guess what I'm looking and hoping for is a partially portable MediaPortal. Something where I could have my entire personalized MediaCenter with all movies and Associated DB's travel with me. Even if there was some way to have the MP databases move with my drive, so if I wanted I could install MP on all my PC's (and possibly friends PC's). Then I could launch MP on whatever PC and point the DB to my portable drive, which also has all my movies and TV series.
I realize this is likely a pipe dream, and one that is probably better asked on the MP forums. But if anyone has any insight as to how this might be accomplished, please let me know. Or if anyone smarter then me wanted to give this a crack and "portablize" MP, then I would be a very willing beta tester. If not, well then at least the above mentioned scenario is how it will work when I dream :-).
