Really ?.

It's spam, trying to get you to click the links and either get infected or purchase something, possibly leading to who knows what, credit card numbers maybe. Ifg you notice it was meant to be a reply to my thread I posted last month, https://portableapps.com/node/27371, but if you go there, there is no reply, so it might have been deleted by an admin or John, but more than likely it's some sort of bot or hacked email.

I would say that yeah, a bot

I would say that yeah, a bot hit up the forum with a bit of spam and you got notified of a new comment to that thread by Drupal, but I wouldn't worry about it if the original spam comment's gone.

But there’s no sense crying over every mistake,
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

no

I meant like if PortableApps.com's security had been compromised and some hacker got a hold of everyone's email and spammed us. I said I didn't get it, in case you implied something like that could be happening. But now I see Chris' comments and it makes sense. And no I didn't notice that it was a reply to your thread.

DADSGETNDOWN was a spammer

who created an account yesterday evening (evening for me, anyway - about 24 hours ago) and proceeded to post spam as replies to just a few (try at least 20 when I glanced at the posting history) threads. If you were subscribed to any of these threads, then you would have been notified of the reply. And if any of the moderators have deleted the spam/reply before you try to view them via the link in the email, well, it doesn't exist anymore!

DADSGETNDOWN isn't the spammer, he's been a member here for 3 years. He created this topic after he received an email notification from PortableApps.com that he thought seems spammy. He was questioning the validity of that email and its contents

Sorry

But you're confused or need glasses. To start IF you look at "my" profile I have been a Member for 3 years 8 weeks. Luckily I didn't get as much spam as you, I only got this 1, and I do subscribe to everything thing I create and even others too, so if you got more than 20 that say they are from me you're mistaken. As you can see from the one I posted here, it's not from me but a reply to my topic, it's from | (Author: reniyaweng), if you got 20 or even one with my name, not only would I be interested but John or someone might be too.

Sorry... my bad... was late at night...

... Sorry DADSGETNDOWN... brain jumped a track and I thought it was your name I saw spamming the forums the other night... :gulp: Smile

Regarding forum moderation, maybe see if you can do something like the vBulletin forums, where normal uses can flag comments as spam, then the forum mods can review posts with lots of spam flags. And for the forum notifications, perhaps restricting it to daily digest or 3 hour delays?

Valid spam

You're subscribed to that thread, so when a spammer posts spam, you get notified of it. Then we get rid of the spam.

Right

Which is one of the reasons I'm thinking of killing notifications. Or at least modding the module not to include the comment contents.

good idea

for people like myself who are here almost every day anyhow, they arent necessary.
But what is with people who come here less often?

If you don't want them, disable them [per-user setting]

If you're here often enough that you don't feel you need them (or if you just don't want them) then you can disable them.

  1. Click the "My account ([UserAccountName])" link at the top of the page.
Or the "My account" link in the User-Block at the left of the page.
  2. Click the "Subscriptions" tab/link at the top of the page's content.
  3. Click "Delivery of notifications" to expand that collapsible fieldset.
  4. Under "Receive notifications:" click "No"
  5. Click "Save".

  6. No more notifications for you, YAY‼

Off By Default

They're off by default. The issue with the above is spam stuff makes us look bad and could effect us being caught in spam filters for legitimate mail.

Oh.

Then I must have turned them on at some point (though I get no notifications currently as I haven't "subscribed" to any threads).
That still might help someone who wants to turn them off if they have perhaps forgotten how they once turned them on, IDK.

This kind of spamming is rather odd (wait, actually all spamming is rather odd in my opinion ;)) but since it occurs and obviously we don't want it to look like PA.c is spamming, removing the contents of the comments in notifications would probably be a good idea.

My vote is to keep

I really like the notifications for a few reasons. I like to find out that there was a reply to something I subscribed to without trying to remember all of them or sifting through them here, taking up time, and or saving bookmarks and such etc and so on, My vote is to keep them.

Core track functionality

Are you aware of the core user tracker functionality? It shows updates on all nodes you own or have commented on.

it's very handy ...

and I use it every now and then. For folks to use it, whe I am logged in, I click on Recent Posts (left column side bar) and then click on "My Recent Posts". List all threads I posted on, and it shows the "New" if anyone posted after I did.

Don't be an uberPr∅. They are stinky.

But also

You don't have to comment, create or otherwise, you just click "Subscribe" and you can follow certain posts and threads without ever saying a word. I guess that might be called, the core user subscription functionality.

No

It's not core - that's the point. It's from a module.
