CamStudio Portable 2.0

I have created a new portable version of CamStudio (create industry-standard AVI video files and using its built-in SWF Producer can turn those AVIs into Streaming Flash videos).

Features:

  • Directory structure is compatible to portableapps.com
  • Uses installed settings
  • Fancy splash-screen

There is a lossless codec available for this from the original sourceforge page. I am looking at how it can be intergrated in the future.

The selfextracting archive can be downloaded from its current location.

The download link (N/A): Latest CamStudio forum topic

Updated 03/02/07 - based on 0.9 PAF for PAM compatability

Thank you

I was going to make a portable version of this, now I don't have to!
One note, though: the root directory has a 'Thumbs.db' file in it... did you open in Thumbnails mode and then zipped without removing the file?

Thanks

Yes more than likely, thanks for spotting it. I will have a look and remove it when I update it after some more testing.

Ah well we all are useless more than once in our lives. Just gotta try to learn from the simple mistakes LMAO.

On a side note:
I have updated the links for BlenderPortable and WinkPortable with the new server links. The old ones will be active for another week. Unfortunately they were getting hammered by more interest then I thought and my ISP wasn't amused.

Camtasia - bleh

Camtasia won't record OpenGL / DirectX applications. It just shows a black screen. (or, at least the version I have used in the past does)

I have another program that will record OpenGL, called "FRAPS" but, stupidly, it doesn't make your voice sound better, and won't simultaneously record "What U Say" and "What U Hear"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FRAPS

What I'd like to see is a portable Camtasia/FRAPS type combination.

Re: Camtasia - bleh

This is Camstudio, not Camtasia (Camstudio is free and in my opinion better).
Also it would be illegal to make a portable version of fraps, because you have to buy it to get the full version.

Thank You

this is GREAT!!! A series of co-workers were having trouble utilizing some new computer functions at work, I used this portable app to record a video tutorial detailing the new processes and got everyone on board.
Thanks Again!

Positive feedback is always

Positive feedback is always nice. There is a lossless codec available but I haven't had chance to try and do anything with it further yet.

Thanks and how to disable splash?

First off, nice app!!

Has anyone successfully disabled the splash screen? I followed the same steps I've used on other portable apps (edit source ini, copy to app location) but the splash keeps splashing. I even tried putting a copy of the ini in every directory of the app - no dice. Thanks.

PS - FRAPS is great for games FPS measuring and taking vids of play, but CamStudio is perfect for home and work related "how to videos" - very nice!

Use this

Simply use this configuration file (CamStudioPortable.ini) instead of the one included,

[CamStudioPortable]
ProgramExecutable=Recorder.exe
ProgramParameters=
ProgramDirectory=App\CamStudio
DataDirectory=Data
SplashScreen=disabled

These are the actual fields used by the launcher, you can learn that after skimming through the NSIS code or simply having a look at the readme.txt (.ini file configuration section)
I know that it's not the same structure as in other PA.com apps, but that's the way tanisthalon did it and we've to respect it. Wink

Registry keys

Hi tanisthalon,
first off I want to say thanks because I really enjoy using your portable version of Wink and CamStudio. 8)
I'd only like to point out something that I just found, with CamStudio Portable some registry keys are left behind, they are under

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Local AppWizard-Generated Applications

there's especially one which I never like, a "Recent File List" key.
I wonder why you don't handle them, like in your other apps, from the NSIS launcher.

Seems you are correct. It is the SWFProducerPortable and MoviePlayer2.1Portable causing the problems. I will look at this tomorrow and re-release it. Missed them somehow, sorry. Probably wont include those extensions when I get around to getting it PAFified, probably just use the main CamStudio program.

FYI, according to my tests

FYI, according to my tests CamStudioPortable.exe is creating also a key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Local AppWizard-Generated Applications\vscap\Settings
this one is not so important because there's nothing in it.

Well, don't want to sound too demanding 8) but there's also a little issue with Wink Portable, one reg key is not deleted on exit
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WinkProject
this is strange because the NSIS launcher seems to be ok.

Sorry, could not resist the occasion. }:)

Good

Yes, that's what beta versions are for.
I'm happy testing these apps, I install first to a virtual machine (no harm to my computer) and use Total Uninstall to see what changes are being made.

Blank screen???

Tested it several times and found it had a blank screen. It was just black. I opened several videos and it would not convert after trying several methods. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Try the 'Help' button when running the program to see it has anything relating to your query. Shouldn't be too much longer though for a new release of CamStudio and when it does I will update the portable version.

4 exe's?

Is there a way to have just one, or are all 4 needed?

All 4

As the program uses all four and they all need to be portable. I think.
