[Closed] Skype won't remember language selection (bug in Skype itself)

Every time I start the program the language has reverted, I go to change it but the next time it has reverted again.

Isn't this information saved?

Sorta,

It's taking it's language cues based on the platform installed. When you run it, it will make sure it's set to whatever the platform's language is.

Not Skype

Skype uses the local PC's settings for ANSI languages in the Windows Control Panel.

No, normal Skype uses the language chosen in the installer - and once installed it can be changed from the interface.

Normal Skype remembers this setting. Portable Skype does not.

Guess I'll have to do some sandboxing trying to see if i can figure out what setting isn't preserved.

Possible Change

I'd looked into this before but for some strange reason, Skype ignored the setting when set in removable mode. So even if we save the bits (in the INI), it forgets and automatically uses the local machine's ANSI setting. I'll take another look at it for the next release to see if anything has changed.

Yes, I've seen other people

Yes, I've seen other people bemoaning this on the official skype forums, so it seems to be a peculiarity of the windows client. Though on their jira someone claimed to have fixed the problem.

Unfortunately it seems that

Unfortunately it seems that normal skype writes the language setting to the registry, haven't yet found a way to override that when using the /datapath setting.

Btw according to this blog, you should also use the /removeable setting when using datapath - its an old blog, but it is probably still valid

Fixed in 5.3

This has been fixed in 5.3.0.108. The bug still exists in Skype itself, but I came up with a way for the launcher to work around it.

Unfixed

This was unfixed in a subsequent release. This is a bug in Skype itself that they don't seem interested to fix. It is difficult to work around without breaking something else. Our earlier fix broke the ability to remember passwords and has been removed.

Closed?

As this isn't an issue with the portablization, but rather with the base app, should we mark this as closed, so it doesn't stay in the bug tracker for an indefinite time?

Good Point

Good point. It's been closed. I've kept a note to it myself on the off chance that Skype changes something internal we can take advantage of to get it working.
