Cheers

Just want to say thanks for this. XMedia Recode has proven to be at least as effective as other freeware media converters such as FormatFactory. Might not be as pretty but the actual results the app produces are excellent. Hopefully others are not put of by the utilitarian GUI.

Thanks Smile

Install issue

I just downloaded and installed this via the PAF install new app option, and it returned an error that it couldn't find the xMedia app, and to reinstall. I did see that it reached out to the remote host to download the "main" app, but was unsure if it actually installed. I looked in the subfolders, and it *did* appear to be there.

I reinstalled by navigating to the installer and installing it "manually." It again reached out to download the main app (I had deleted the previous directory, so it was a 'fresh' install). Then, went back to PA and started it up.

It was likely a one-off situation, but still wanted to alert you to it. Smile

Also, when I go to designate the target directory for the new file, it defaults to a non-existent \documents folder on my portable drive, even if I've navigated to a different folder. But then, when I hit cancel, it all of a sudden knows where I want it to go. Smile Again, maybe a one-off situation, or an issue with the main proggie.

A couple quick tests and it does really well, though. I've never used it before (had SUPER for years) but this looks like a winner.

Thanks for the report

I just did a fresh install and it ran the app without problem. It does take a little while to start up though, it has to be said! Hopefully it was just a one-off.

Yeah, I set 'X:\Documents' as the default but if it doesn't exist it should just fall back to the local 'My Documents'. At least it does here Smile Once you've saved to the directory you want, it should remember it from then on though.

Thanks again for the feedback. Give me a shout if you have any more trouble.

I also had a similar issue

I also installed using the Menu's "Install a New App" option, and it gave the similar error message that it couldn't find XMedia Recode.exe.

So I deleted the folder, and installed by double-clicking "XMediaRecodePortable_2.1.4.8_Development_Test_1.paf.exe" and browsing to the correct folder, after which it worked fine.

This is the first time any app has not worked using the "Install a New App" option for me.

Weird.

Strange

Yes, that is weird. I just did two clean installs from the menu, 1.5.2 (external hard drive) and 2.0b3 (USB stick) to test and it went fine. I had a look at the "installer.ini" file to see if I'm missing one of the finer points but I can't see anything amiss, although the file should be named "...online.paf.exe". That's a mistake on my part but I'm not sure it should cause this problem.

I really can't explain this at the moment Sad

Speed up

Warning: Not for everybody!

Loading this program even from my internal hard drive took too long. I have no current intention of converting anything to a Nokia or LG (or any other) phone/handheld, so figured that the \Profile directory was extraneous.

I deleted the folder, which includes 435 files.

With no other changes, the program now loads in about half the time.

Re-download

Yeah, I figure that if I really need to convert to a phone, I can always re-install XMediaRecode.

Or for that matter, I'm pretty sure a person could kill off all of the profiles except for the phones models/brands currently in the household.

Pre-Release?

I've been using this for over a month now and have distributed among about ten others. None have had issues. Is it likely the release team to get this to pre-release?

Crashing on Windows 7

I'm running Windows 7, and whenever I try to open an avi file that uses the 4CC dvsd Codec, XMedia Recode crashes on me. It also crashes if I try to open an mp4 file.

If I use "Save old format avi" in VirtualDub, I can then open that new avi in XMedia Recode, but not the original avi with the dvsd codec.

I also tried running this on a Virtual XP, and it crashes on the same avi file.

Base application

Sounds like a problem in the codec that the base application uses, and not a fault of the portabilization of the application.

As such, you should probably notify the program's author to get it fixed.

Weird

It's weird because I can play the same files in other programs (Windows Media Player, VLC, etc), and I can open and encode them in Handbrake as well. But they're crashing in SUPER and I also just installed the non-portable version of XMedia Recode and it crashed in there as well so - guess I have some investigating to do.

EXACTLY!

If it crashes in the portable version, and it crashes in the standard version, then it means that the program itself has the issue.

You've completed your investigating, I'd say. If you want to take this any further, you can:

  • Figure out the codec that VLC is using and try to make XMediaRecode use it
  • Track down the source of the bad XMediaRecode codec and get them to fix it
  • Track down the author of XMediaRecode and get him to fix it

Alternately, as the old adage goes, if it hurts when you bang your head against the wall, stop doing it. In other words, either use VLC (which works for you) or as you said before, if you change the file, it will play.

Do you have any download numbers?

@Test release Team: Has anyone checked this out? The app works fine, a good example of the online installer and no issues at all.

Added backup/restore of

Added backup/restore of "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectDraw\MostRecentApplication" if running as admin.

I've seen doing that before, but is it really necessary ?
In the end there will be that many 'Microsoft' keys to backup/restore !

Don't bother

I'd say don't bother with backing up this key. It's a Windows thing which is safer left alone (especially considering various applications will use it and could end up with a mess anyway). I put it on my list of "keys to ignore" in the PAL manual because I didn't reckon it was a breaker. There are other such keys which aren't safe to tamper with and we don't, one more in the same line is nothing wrong.

Works with XP SP3 - Administrative rights

Tried it on my home machine (Pentium 4 3.2 GHz) running XP SP3 and administrative rights.
Install went smoooth and so did a conversion of an AVI file to a format for my Creative XFi-2.

I presume this was just a temporary blip at their end as I tested before upload & again just now (everything working fine) but post again if you're still having problems.

Clear cache and temp

I suggest you clear your browser cache and temp directory before trying again. Updated myself yesterday without issue.

yup

it was a blip. just downloaded now, installed fine.

and as I have my Opera delete the cache on exit by default I usually avoid the problems one can have from that.

thanks

Anyone else experience an error? Installed first as an update to a working app and then as fresh install. No go. Had to revert to a previous version.

Unremarkable...

Unremarkable old system, Windows XP Pro, SP3
Installing to x:\PortableApps

Using XmediaRecodePortable to convert audio recordings from .rm to .mp3.

Operates normally with versions:
2.2.9.3
2.2.9.7
2.3.0.4

Errors out immediately by using the Encode button:
2.3.0.8
2.3.1.3

Not stressing the app much. Smile Pretty basic and worked fine with previous versions.

I found that the encoding

I found that the encoding window crashes immediately when I try to use another program to minimise/manipulate it. This happens with DM2, RBtray or using Virtuawin to move it to another desktop. Could this be the issue?

Developer Version?

Is there an advantage using this Portable version over the "Portable" version available on the developer's website?

That is simply the file that

That is simply the file that is downloaded by the online installer and then sorted in the correct folder structure of the Portable Apps Format specification - to accomplish easy updating, user data conservation during update, integration into the PA.c platform etc. And perhaps some traces have to be taken care of, but I don't know about that for XMediaRecode.

Thank you but...

Thanks for the reply but I should have been a bit clearer! I am really asking whether the portable version from the developers website was truly portable or if the PA version has to do registry wrapping etc. If the developer version is portable I might use it instead as I don't use the PA platform.
Sorry for the confusion.

Official?

Hey Prapper.

Have you considered posting this and your other mature projects to the the "Ready for Release" thread? Most of your projects are ready IMO.

Last I Checked

XMedia Recode was in the hall of shame last I checked due to GPL violations. They were using a GPLed build of ffmpeg with all the GPLed packages enabled and linking it to their closed source code, which is a license violation. ffmpeg has the ability to be built as LGPL with no GPLed features enabled which allows it to be linked to closed source code. Until this is resolved, XMedia Recode is ineligible for official release.

Bug maybe

Worked great yesterday. Today - even after a few reboots - it says "another instance..is starting".

Hmmm. Hope it hasn't been covered above.

With the app closed, go into

With the app closed, go into the XMediaRecodePortable\Data folder. Is there a file called "PortableApps.comLauncherRuntimeData-XMediaRecodePortable.ini"?

If so, delete it and run the app again. Does that fix it?

I had worked that out and,

I had worked that out and, yes it did fix it, That ini file had "=started" embeded within it.

Strangely, although it appears to be fixed now, for a couple of runs (and exits), the ini file repeated the problem. Then it stopped repeating the problem and appears to work continuously. Hmmm.

Thanks

I have worked with this for

I have worked with this for several portable releases now. It works flawlessly and runs stable for at least 17 hours of video encoding. This app should be promoted to an official portable app. Thank you, prapper, for providing this.

Likely No Official

As XMedia recode has been accused of violating the GPL by more than one open source project, we will likely not make it official in our directory. We only do 100% legal software.
