encryption software

Hey.
Does anybody know or has used this 2 encryption programs?

They claim that they dont need any Admin privileges in Windows, and they run straight from the flashdrive.

How would using this utilities affect the performance of portable apps, suchs as Thunderbird Portable?

Thanks a lot for your comments- Sergio

Nope

Cryptainer can be used by a non-admin, but it requires admin privs to install the device driver. So you can't bring it to a locked-down PC and use it if it's not already installed on that PC. I think Private Disk has the same issue.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

thanks

I see.
I have yet to test private disk, b/c i have admin privs both at home and work. a friend will test that for me.
If anyone else is willing to test it I can email the .zip with the portable installation (600k) and compressed volume (5mb).

Do you know any application that won't require such users permissions?

Thanks for your help- Sergio

confirmed

You need administrator privs for Private disk too.

I created a limited user account in WIN XP, and when i plugged the flash drive with an autorun for private disk, i got a msg that told me that it needs admin permission to install the software.

I changed users, plugged the drive and it launched without any msg.

Anyone knows an encryption software that does not require any privs on any computer??
Thanks a lot- Sergio

I have not tested myself

I have not tested myself yet, but these guys

http://www.newsoftwares.net/folderlock/

state that their software does not need to be installed.

And these guys

http://www.encryption-software.de/challenger/en/home.html

explicitly claim that their software will run without admin rights...

Btw.: Can anyone explain what a "synchronous stream cypher" is? The latter software uses such a cypher - 128 bits in the freeware version, 256 bits after buying the licence...

neither is free or open source

so probably won't be of interest to most users here.

Actually...

The basic version of FolderLock is free. I used it before I found out about TrueCrypt. When I used it I was not afraid of leaving regs behind, so I did not bother checking if it did or not. Also, I am an admin both at work and home, so I dont know if it works well with limited users.

The only way you can encrypt files with its portable feature is to put them inside the "locker" folder that they provide. That means that whatever is outside that folder is not encrypted and that you cannot encrypt the whole drive like TrueCrypt.

In summary, FolderLock is a very easy and effective way to lock access to folders/files, but I honestly would use TrueCrypt instead.

I was going by FAQ

Q46. Is Folder Lock free or Shareware?
Folder Lock is NOT freeware! It’s shareware, which means 'try before you buy'. We give you a 35-use trial so that you can test the program and check whether it is useful for you or not. If you find it useful and want to keep it for an unlimited number of times without any kind of limitation, register your copy and get a full version downloaded via email in minutes.

Maybe you had an older, truly free version?

You're right. I dont know

You're right. I dont know how or why, but when I was using it, I didn't have to pay anything for it, and I used it for quite a while.

dirlock

Anyone familiar with dirlock software? How can we make it portable? Can you please help me to hide/remove it in the programs of control panel?

Thank you!

TrueCrypt is another open-source tool

I've had good luck on my USB drive with http://www.truecrypt.org/ - an open source tool hosted by sourceforge.net. However I run with power user or admin privs ... I'd not put too much faith in anyone claiming a tool (especially one you BUY) allows you to run on a locked-down school or library PC without the admin at least enabling it. If this were true, it would be classified as a Windows bug Wink and Microsoft would be issuing yet another patch one of these days to stop this.

blowfish advanced cs

I've used this for years and it worked of the 'a' drive in the old days and now works on just about any windows machine I try it on from just about any medium that can be read. It does not need any special account privileges and its only small. The sources are available below with the product, but I'm not sure if it's technically "open source". Give it a try!..ask the author!

It's open source

The source code is released under the Apache 2.0 License.
From Wikipedia:
The Apache License (versions 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0) requires preservation of the copyright notice and disclaimer, but it is not a copyleft license - it allows use and distribution of the source code in both open source and closed source software.

This is a great tool (it's on my list), but it is only a file encryption software, and thus it cannot be compared to Truecrypt or Cryptainer which are volume encryption tools.

I'm with LynnL in that a tool that lets you create virtual disks and mount them as new drives should be run (or at least authorized to run) by an admin user.

Ops, almost forget to say that Blowfish Advanced CS is portable out of the box. 8)
