Does anyone know of any freeware or open source file manager that comes anywhere close to Salamander that could be used as a replacement. Or can anyone existing users suggest any tweaks that could make it portable. I know distributing a portable version would be out of the question but any help would be much appreciated. Unfortunately it seems to rely rather heavily on the registry, it sometimes works, sometimes doesnt and seems to behave rather oddly all in all. Cheers
For those of you that dont know about this really very good software - www.altap.cz
It's a perfect, fast file manager and the best twin panel type.
I use it from many years ago.

You might want to try out Free Commander. It is quite configurable and from what I could see, it could be a good choice for you.
Be sure to download the version PAF version (for easy portable install like the applications found here) or the portable Zip version (for self-install). It even has a U3 version for people who have that system already.
I've used Free Commander on portable hard drives, USB sticks, and portably (not "installed") on my computer's local hard drive.

...although I'm not sure about ALL that SS does, if you're simply looking for a great free FileMgr replacement which is fairly small and runs portably (not necessarily stealthily), try PowerDesk "trial" version (avanquest.com).
It's free - altho' not Open Source (so you'll never see it offered here) - and runs rings around just about every other File Mgr app I've ever tried.
My next recommendation would be "A43" (Google it), which is even smaller.

My Commander is the smallest member of commander's family. It is simple and easy to use dual-pane File Manager developed specifically for Windows 7. It also offers a built-in file viewer to view files in hex, text or as images, has built-in iso creator and archive handling.
Myco downloads are only available via Developer's Site and Source Code (http://myco.yonan.ro) is not yet available. Software is totally free and is released under BSD style licence.
