And wait

And wait, and wait ,and wait ,and wait.

One day hell will freeze over ( then we may see the platform release )

Instead of being negative

Instead of being negative about it (as you CONSTANTLY are, 9 of your last ten posted comments, and probably more, have something negative to say about the fluid release date of the new platform version) why not try to do something useful around here like help beta test apps, or at the least live by the old saying about not saying anything when you haven't got anything nice to say?

You have to realize that this is a 100% volunteer effort, nobody gets paid for their time nor effort here, not even John. At the moment this project is leaking money and thus the recent talks about a fund-raiser, and all the while the few who are driving it still have lives to live. Either learn to deal with a release schedule that has to revolve around a couple of actual people's actual lives, not a faceless department of nobodies who get paid 9-5, or please, just stop the negativity.

Not being negative

I am not being negative at all! I am very grateful for all the work the PortableApps.com team have done.

I was just curious to see when it was being released.

And by the way, those last 9 comments weren't posted by me.

No it was me

Those last 9 comments were by me.

The reason I am being negative is because I asked before Christmas if the platform would be out by Christmas. John replied "YES IT WOULD" as it was nearly ready.

Despite numerous promises ( nearly ready, few more days, keep an eye out e.t.c ) it's nearly 5 months now and still nothing.

Not helping

You've been here two years, and in that time, lots of snarky comments about release times have been posted by a lot of people. You should know by now that
A. they don't make things happen faster
B. they add to a generally negative atmosphere on these boards
C. they tend to paint the complainer in a bad light

Also, John has acknowledged his inability to give accurate predictions on releases, and tried to stop giving time frames, although he has slipped once or twice since then.

I wish I could do something to help accelerate the release - code review, Delphi programming, design, or even helping with the myriad non-development tasks that take John away from coding - but since none of those options are available, I just need to wait, as does everyone else.

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

Just Wait

I suggest we just wait for the Final release of the PortableApps.com Platform 2.0. I guess it should be coming within one to three weeks.

Nevertheless, it is going to be a great release!

Thanks for that reply!
I try to resist commenting pointless rants for some months now (especially as some users seem only to wait for their cue to post the same meaningless jabbering again and again).
I'd like to add another possibility to take some workload off John's shoulders - answering bug reports/feature requests/simple supports issues so that he has not to answer similar questions all the time.
As some users tend to read announcements a lot, maybe they could offer a little bit of their time to contribute rather than to gripe...
We all know that John is easily tempted to let slip an estimated release date and that he often cannot adhere to his own deadlines. But he decided what parts of his project to maintain by himself and that is to be respected with all consequences (i.e. deadlines not kept for other necessities).

I don't think there's a temptation to "let slip" anything other than what features may be upcoming since quality is the key driver here and not user demands.

Who cares? 1.6.1 works very well and while it seems a bare bones affair, there was a time when it had an extremely limited feature set and think now what is on the agenda surely it would take a great deal of work behind the scenes, particularly in regard to the networking functions which really is a very bold move.

Isn't there an incremental updater in the forthcoming official platform rather than that in b5 which is simply a downloader?

@plethora

There is an updater in Beta 5, but in 2.0, there will be an improved updater and an App Directory that will allow users to download and install apps from PortableApps.com within the platform.
