gaim is 10 times better, why would you need msn messenger if gaim can log into your msn account anyway. most functions are also carried over although some are not.
Another alternative: Miranada IM. http://www.miranda-im.org/
Portable, with lots of plugins for MSN, Jaber, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, customization... it´s a permanent guest in my USB and hard drive.
Anyway, it´s clear that there are many alternatives to Microsoft´s Messenger.
i tried mirianda and also gaim, i found gaim to be good but take up too much space on this small drive, mirianda though would be ideal but it doesnt display your contact groups, can i fix this at all?
Meebo is an AJAX-based web IM app that allows you to log into several IM protocols all from your JavaScript-enabled web browser. See my blog for more info on that.
Well, I move around a lot, using 4 or 5 computer wether I am at home, at my parents, at work... and I'd really like to be abble to carry with me all my contacts history, smileys, themes, received files... from MSN Messenger.
And I really mean MSN Messenger, not any "clone", as they all lack some functions I use.
The application itself can be installed on most PCs, and those where it is blocked, well, GAIM or PikaMsn won't work either. So do anyone know about a way to use always the same "profile", stored on my USB disk, from any computer ?

Well a real alternative i found lately is a website-based msn messenger. It lets u log on to msn and some other IMs and chat online, although its a bit slow.
I do not know if anybody has seen this one, but it's actually Windows Live Messenger Portable. Called Windows Live Messenger Lite. It's definitially against copyright though.

I think it is really dangerous to release Microsoft's program by adding "Portable" before the programs name. We don't want John to get caught
And there is another problem: The program isn't open source. It will be harder to get rid of registry entries.

Another alternative would be Trillian Anywhere ( http://www.trilliananywhere.com/ ). I'm a Miranda Fan-Boy myself though.
hi
nothing new about Portable MSN Messenger ?
PixaMSN is a small MSN Messenger clone. Here is the Portable Freeware write-up:

I've found that but don't know if it's real "portable"
http://rapidshare.de/files/17609632/PortMSN7.5.rar
...is installed on most every machine, and if it is disabled, there's no way you could make a portable version run.
Just use Meebo (AJAX-based Gaim) or Gaim, or Trillian or Miranda. Why do you need MSN messenger itself?

one is http://www.ebuddy.com/
there is also webmessenger.msn.com
But there’s no sense crying over every mistake,
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Sorry JTH, I just realized that and was coming back to delete it.
