Looking up smtp.gmail.com
I have from several weeks this problem. Sometimes I can't send messages.
My system : windows xp pro sp3
TB version 3.1.9
Antivirus Avast! free version 5.1.889
Windows Firewall
How can I test with a soft if my ISP is blocking SMTP ports ?
email account configuration :
Server Settings :
Server Name : imap.gmail.com
Port 993
User Name accountname@gmail.com
Security Settings : SSL/TLS
Authentication method : Normal Password
Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings
Google Mail - smtp.gmail.com
Description : Google Mail
Server Name : smtp.gmail.com
Port : 587
User Name : accountname@gmail.com
Authentication Method : Normal password
Connection security : STARTTLS
It happens too with yahoo and hotmail accounts. Sometimes I can't send messages.
First I received a windows "looking up smtp.gmail.com" endless and when accept the message to revise configuration.
I use with a gmail account the Goldmine client sometimes and when I can't send messages I received this error :
the socket was disconnected unexpectedly
I don't know what to do and how depure with a specialized soft this problem.

Hm, according to my gmail the smtp port is 465..?
is often used when encrypted communication is wanted, e.g STARTTLS, so this could help?
On the other hand the 465 should not be used by smtp servers since apparently it was assigned to other services thought many servers use it still.
The encryption might for some reason not run properly, trying to switch it off could solve some temporary problem?

You can telnet to the SMTP port to confirm connectivity to the mail server. Open a command line window and enter the following:
telnet smtp.gmail.com 587
A response like this:
220 mx.google.com ESMTP p23sm541130ybk.9
...is confirmation that you have contacted a mail server, and that it accepted your telnet connection to the specified port. It also obviously means no one is blocking port #587.
Type in "quit" to gracefully close the telnet session.
EDIT:
If the telnet fails, try pinging the server as a diagnostic aid. Open a command line window and enter:
ping smtp.gmail.com
If there is a connectivity problem to the mail server, the ping will fail and should produce a relevant error message. Cut and paste the reply in your answer so we can try to determine the cause.
I have made telnet :
The response was :
220 mx.google.com ESMTP r57sm1676152wes.25
I made the ping :
ping smtp.gmail.com
but the windows dissapear very fast. How can I read this window ?

I'm guessing you are running the commands in a 'Run' window. I think if you open a "Command Prompt" window and run the commands in that window instead, it will not disappear.
By the way, the response "220 mx.google.com ESMTP r57sm1676152wes.25" definitely means you are connecting to the requested port on the mail server. The port is not being blocked.

ping is ok as you see
the other pic shows that you have already one connection with that server running (thunderbird) so avast will block that as it thinks this is an unusual situation.
The situation is not that unusual, but avast seems to block it.
Anyway, as it is just one computer I assume, one connection to one smtp at a time is needed only.
If you are trying to use the smtp server from more then one mail client at the same time, who knows what will the avast do. This might be one of the sources of your problems. Make sure that only one connection is running at a time and report again.

I am here again.
Excuse me, but sometimes I don't receive warning of new answers.
I continue with the same problem, but I will try your advice.
As you know I have two email clients normally "running". Goldmine 5.5 (a CRM soft) and portable Thunderbird.
These soft are constantly used. I don't know what to do without them.
I have posted this problem in the avast forum with no answer.
I observed when I got the message looking up, that if I retry I received the endless window "sending". But after a while I retry again and usually I success. No need to reiniatiate, no need something special.
About telnet I am not receiving that message after the last avast update.
But my problem continues.

you have two mail clients running at the same time? possibly both having the same mail accounts set up in them?
So here you are with the problems. Mail accounts are often set so they contact the servers at regular times. Servers do not like to be contacted too often and will block the connection.
Example: mail client 1 contacts the server, works ok, but then one minute later the client 2 contacts the server, this is not ok, since the server will probably allow this only two or three times and will block then for few minutes to block misuse.
Running two mail clients at the same time is no go, regardless what kind of clients it is, the mail server will block you sooner or later, sometimes even isp have mechanism to allow only certain times between mail server contacts and closing the particular connection for some minutes before opening it again.
My mail server operator allows me to contact the server 3 times within short time and I have to make a break of minimum 2 minutes before trying again.
So I recommend you to use e-mail as supposed and not misuse the servers as this may lead to complete block by the server owner.

I have two client mail, but not at the same time.
In Goldmine client I only have a gmail account. Imap account.
The looking up message goes with the other accounts too.
The Goldmine client is not usually open. When I open the program is not open the client.
I have to open the mail center in Goldmine. But usually is closed.
Sometimes I sent an email from Goldmine directly without download the mails in the goldmine client.
Really I use Goldmine with only an account to send messages, not receive.
And the looking up message occur too when goldmine is closed.

Are you using the "WebMail" Add-on within Thunderbird? As this handles all the server configs and set ups etc.
http://webmail.mozdev.org/
I have successfully used this both with gmail and yahoo.
No.
I am using, and have at this moment deactivated is Webmail notifier.
I will enter in safe mode and comment.
i have traslated to a system with avira to try new points of view.

With Avira continue the same problem.
I have revised configurations in this new system.
Account configuration for TB supposed is not neccesary. It's portable.
Until now in safe mode no error. ......
I will put the addons installed.....
Windows xp pro sp3
Last version Thunderbird portable
In safe mode the program loads in spanish.
I have the portable spanish version and an addon to put in english to try to explain better in this forum.
In safe mode until now I am not receiving the message looking up smtp.gmail.com
or looking up smtp.live.com
But I have obtained two times this other one :
"Error de envío de mensaje
Falló el envío del mensaje
El mensaje no se ha podido enviar porque se ha perdido la conexión al servidor SMTP smtp.live.com
en mitad de la transacción. Vuelva a intentarlo o contacte con su administrador de red."
I try to translate to english :
Message Error
Message sending fails
The message is not delivered why lost connection in the middle to server SMTP smtp.live.com . Try again or contact with your internet administrator
Windows xp pro sp3

Now, in spanish I am obtaining the equivalent to
looking up smtp.gmail.com
in safe mode

In the present situation when I reiniated TB I see in the sub-window of message contain this :
The proxy server is refusing connections
The connection was refused when attempting to contact the proxy server you have configured. Please check your proxy settings and try again.
* Check the proxy settings to make sure that they are correct.
* Contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is
working.
Try again
I haven't configured a proxy as long I remember.

I am able to telnet to Port# 587 at smtp.live.com but not to port#25:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>telnet smtp.live.com 25
Connecting To smtp.live.com...Could not open connection to the host, on port 25:
Connect failed
If you are configured to use Port #25, that could be the problem. Are you configured for port# 25 or #587?
Try running a traceroute to the live mail server. Maybe we can identify the node that is causing that "proxy" message.
Run the command "tracert smtp.live.com" and post back the results.
Hey -
I had the same issue, I have 14 Gmail accounts that I manage on TB 3.1.11. Running Win 7 64bit.
I start Thunderbird send 3 emails then TB get stuck on looking up SMTP address forever.
I fixed it by deleting all smtp addresses that TB set up automatically when I add accounts.
1. Tools -> Account Settings -> Scroll to the bottom of the list to "Outgoing Server (SMTP)
2. Deleted all SMTP servers but one
It fixed the issue for me, hope it helps!
I uninstall Avast
and
install Avira
The problem is gone.
