I've found several comments about this, but I've not found a solution. I'm currently trying to recover my ThunderBird Inbox following an error resulting from hibernation while using ThunderBirdPortable. Does anyone know a solution? For some reason I can't change the setting for what I want my computer to do when I close the lid. The option is greyed out (I'm using Windows 7 Starter).
I'm thinking of going back to XP, because otherwise I don't know how I can carry on with my current system of running PortableApps from my external hard drive.
When your system hibernates, it disconnects all USB devices. When it wakes up, the software wakes up before the drives do, so it looks like the device it is running on was ripped out from under it. This is, unfortunately, an issue with Windows itself and there is no easy workaround other than recoding all underlying software (not just the portable bits we do) to allow for it, which is highly unlikely.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Wouldn't closing the app(s) before closing the lid resolve the problem? I rarely leave stuff open when I'm done and ready to close up.
